Artist Statement

This piece is a digitally-created self portrait. It was my first experimentation with digital art (other than our logo designs) in which I used a photo of myself as reference for a drawing done on my computer. The assignment was relatively simple, just to take a quick photo booth selfie before uploading it to Acorn.

We used the digital editing app Acorn for this assignment. I’ve only used it for the one assignment, but it seemed like a simpler version of photoshop. I put the picture on the first layer, then used a second layer to trace the major features and shadows of my face. In a third layer I used the color selector and fill tool to select shades from the original picture before adding them to the digital drawing. I added a few highlights before saving the image.

This drawing included elements of line, which helped to form accurate features unlike what I would have made had I not used a reference. The element of color was also used and especially important seeing as they were drawn from the original image. I filled in the background as well to make the picture balanced. My next steps would be to get rid of the black lines on my face, and maybe try a different, brighter image.
