This 9-week class is a good chance for students to get a taste of different aspects of Theater. We cover audience etiquette, production crews, vocal techniques, movement activities, original playwriting, duet acting and improvisation. Students have a chance to perform onstage with their peers. This is not a requirement for taking Theater 1, but it would provide good background knowledge.
This semester-long class incorporates many of the techniques covered in Theater 6, such as vocal techniques and movement. Students go more in depth with learning characterizations and will perform monologues, duets, and a class play. We also do play analysis, as well as a voiceover unit. This class focuses more on the acting side of Theater and is a requirement for Theater 2. As a bonus, we also take a field trip to see a musical matinee at one of the Olathe high schools. We also present a "Theater Night" for family and friends free of charge so the class can demonstrate what they have learned over the semester.
This is a semester-long class that builds off Theater 1. The focus is on acting, although we do cover some of the backstage production crews. In this class, we study the history of Greek Theater, explore the oral tradition of storytelling, and practice some forensic activities like impromptu speaking and dramatic interpretation. These activities combine to build confidence in student public speaking skills while allowing more individualized instruction. This class will also have a field trip to see an Olathe high school musical matinee during the semester and participate in "Theater Night" alongside Theater 1.
This is a semester-long class that focuses exclusively on backstage -- no acting is required. With Stagecraft, students learn different production crews such as costumes, publicity, lights, sound, makeup, set design, scenic painting and props. They also will help with the current production at the time, such as painting sets for the school musical. Even if your interests lean more toward acting, knowing the production crew side is always good to understand the totality of Theater. This class also takes a field trip to see a musical at one of the Olathe high schools. Students from this class can also participate in "Theater Night" each semester as crew members to demonstrate what they have learned.
