Capstone Design Step 5-8

The premise of the entire second semester is to demonstrate our advanced understanding of the engineering and design process through our Capstone Project. We are being tasked with producing, and promoting, a product or service and to develop this idea through the eight steps of the design process. We have just complete the final fours steps of the design process, manufacturing and performance testing.

After finally completing our Capstone, we can reflect our work. From efficiency to collaboration, a lot of concepts were pulled together in order for this project to be completed. This document is a small fraction of a summary of the work we completed this year and below will be a few highlights.

Here is a slide show detailing our process a little more in detail. This presentation discusses our mentors, our classification schemes, our selection processes, and the results of our experiment testing. The information in the slide show reflects all of the research and critical thinking that was necessary to complete our project.

Here you can see a video of our 3-D models. This was the entire result of our project, these three models, one of which would become our prototype. Of the three, we went with the singluar queen bed design as it would be the most comfortable living space for a single adult, which is our target consumer.

Lastly, after finally creating our project, we needed to advertise. We were able to create flyers and infographics in order to convey our ideas and promote our community.

Reflection

As we finally close out our Capstone project, I feel like an engineer. It gives me a feeling of gratitude to know that not only am I helping homeless people, but I am taking their thoughts and feelings into consideration. It is all too important to be empathetic to the homeless and although a home in general is better than no home, it is still essential to take into account their needs in order to promote self betterment. These people must not only feel welcome, but safe in our community in order for our potential rehabilitation and therapy services to provide any real benefit. The more research we do regarding how best to help homeless people, the more tangible our idea becomes and it is a feeling of great satisfaction to help those who do not necessarily have the means to help themselves. Our only concern now is funding because in reality this will most likely be about a $10,000 project to build one home.
