English 9

English is one of my favorite classes. I enjoy writing because I love talking. I believe that writing something down is a much easier way to comprehend a message. Sometimes I prefer writing or texting to writing because I can more eloquently explain my reasoning. I specifically enjoy argumentative writing, but I believe any form of writing is gratifying.

Poetry

One of our more significant units in English was poetry. We studied works by Langston Hughes, Maya Angelou, and William Shakespeare in order to really understand poetry and make our own poems even better.

One of the poems I composed was a love poem, entitled to one of my dear friends...

Thomas

When I first met you

I knew I would forever be

Mesmerized by your emerald eyes, the color of grass so green

Yet somehow dark, like a work of art, with secrets drawn between

Driven wild by your goofy smile, that makes my heart just melt

It lights up the night, like a candle so bright, with a warmth I’ve never felt

Your strong, soft hands are warm and tan, as our fingers intertwine

And when we embrace, the smile on your face, whispers, “You are mine”

When you aren’t here, my heart sheds a tear, for I miss you more than you’ll know

I’m happy with you, after all we’ve been through, including the highs and the low

Yet our future is unknown, pray we’ll never be alone, but we don’t know what’s in store

Pero te queiro, yo te adoro, y tu eres mi unico amor

Reflection

Originally I wrote the poem as a joke, but then I really got into it. My friendship with "Thomas" includes me pretended he's the "love of my life," and with him being so, of course I had to write a love poem about him. At first it was hard to write it in the first place because I didn't have romantic feelings toward him, but I had to write the poem as if I did. It was also sort of difficult to get a good balance of infatuation for it to seem heartwarming without being dramatic and cheesy. However I learned that a good writer can write from all angles and perspectives without actually believing what their writing. I learned I can adapt to the task and I am creative enough to write in a way that may persuade one to think what I want them to, which in this case, was that I was in love with "Thomas." I am most proud of the use of our chemistry as friends. We had a very good friendship and one of the things we talked about a lot was Spanish, and I am quite prideful in the way that I was able to cohesively incorporate the language in the poem in a way that still made sense if you didn't know that about us.
