For this project, Analiese, Jacob, Sola, and I were told to make up an experiment to test our given type of homeostasis. We chose to experiment on pH homeostasis. We decided to experiment on how fast it takes for saliva pH to return to normal after eating something very acidic. First we had to complete research on how pH homeostasis works and plan out our procedure for the experiment. Once we completed the experiment and found our results, we wrote a scientific article to explain our experiment, procedure, results, and also show our data using a graph. The article is below on the left. Then, we put most of the information from our scientific article into a poster on Google Slides to make it easier to show our results and share findings with the class. The digital poster is below on the right.
maintaining equilibrium to keep an organism going
works subconsciously in your body to keep a constant internal environment
uses positive and negative feedback to react to stimuli and react accordingly
our experiment was to find out how homeostasis worked to keep our mouth's saliva at a normal pH
a part of homeostasis in which the body detects stimulus and reacts with the correct response to bring the body back to equilibrium
negative signals are sent from the brain to a part of the body to complete homeostasis
this was used in our lab to bring our saliva back to a normal pH
a part of homeostasis in which instead of counter-acting the stimulus, it intensifies it, which puts the body in a positive feedback loop to help the body process certain stimuli
this wasn't really part of our experiment because our stimulus required negative feedback
potential of hydrogen
the pH scale is used to determine to acidity of a solution
in our experiment, we used lemons to alter the acidity of our saliva and frequently tested our saliva with pH strips
Overall, I think this project went very well. Our group worked really well together and we were able to produce a well-thought-out experiment while having a lot of fun. One thing I think I did well was keeping our group on track and inspired. I'm friends with all of the people in my group so sometimes it was hard to stay on topic. I feel like I reminded my group members of what we had to do and get done. Another thing I think our group did well was being creative. We were told to do an experiment to test pH homeostasis and the experiment we came up with was unique and creative.
One thing I can work on is being more organized. Throughout our project, there were a bunch of random papers in my notebook and we made a lot of group documents that got constantly mixed up. Another thing I want to do for the next project is have a better understanding of the subject before we jump into the project. In this unit, I feel like I should've asked more questions to really understand the concept because I was a little confused going into the experiment.
During this project, my group and I demonstrated great communication. We got along really well so it was easy for us to talk about what was going on and how each of us was doing our part. We also texted each other after school to make sure everything got done on time. We also demonstrated being conscientious learners because we came up with a great experiment, executed it well, and turned it everything done and on time. All of our work was well-thought-out and original.
