Procedure A:
Process and Procedure:
Put 2 calcium turnings into the weighing dish or small beaker
Obtain 2 small pieces of magnesium ribbon, approximately 1 cm each, and a short piece of aluminum foil
Place 24-well reaction plate on top of white paper
Use pipet to add 20 drops of distilled water to wells A1-A3
Test the water in those wells withj piece pf red litmus paper and record inital color of the "litmus test"
Use forceps to add one piece of calium to A1
Use forceps to add one piece of magnesium ribbon to well A2
Tear off a 2 cm piece of aluminum foil and roll it into a loose ball, then put into well A3
Observe and record data
Test water wells with litmus paper after reactions
Use a pipet and add 20 dropsĀ of 0.5M HCl in to wells C1-C3
Use forceps to add one piece of calium to A1
Use forceps to add one piece of magnesium ribbon to well A2
Tear off a 2 cm piece of aluminum foil and roll it into a loose ball, then put into well A3
Observe and record observations
Test the combustion of the reactions by bringing a lighted wooden splint to the space just above each well C1-C3
Using a thermometer, measure the temperature of each solution C1-C3
Dispose of waste and rinse out wells
Procedure B:
Place 24-well reaction plate on the top of a sheet of black paper
Use a pipet to add 20 drops of alkalline earth metal solutions as follows:
MgCl2 to wells A1-C1
CaCl2 to wells A2-C2
SrCl2 to wells A3-C3
BaCl2 to wells A4-C4
Use a clean pipet and add 20 drops of the unknown alkaline eatht metal solution to wells A5-C5
Add 20 drops to testing soltion to the proper wells:
Na2CO3 to wells A1-A5
Na2SO4 to wells B1-B5
KIO3 to wells C1-C5
Record observations- if a solid forms, write PPT (precipitate) in the appropriate data table space, and if no reaction occured, write NR (no reaction) in the appropriate data table space
Dispose of waste properly
