For our argumentative writing unit, we started off by learning a lot about Native American culture, and reading the book "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian." After that, we read articles, and watched informational videos on how different types of people feel about having Native American's as sports mascots. This was the extremely controversial topic my peers and I had to write about. We were told to: “Answer the following question with a five-paragraph essay: Is the use of Native American mascots a source of pride and honor for Native Americans, or is it racist and detrimental to Native American culture?”
Throughout the process of writing this argumentative essay, I improved my time management and organization skills. I had to manage my time in a way that would allow me to research all the information I needed, while starting my essay and finishing all the paragraphs needed. I also worked on organization skills by organizing all my information on a piece of paper so that I could easily find and cite everything that I needed. I also showed growth in cultural competence, and critical thinking. I worked on cultural competence in this project in many ways. Firstly, I had to think about both sides of the argument, and feel for both sides before representing a side. Secondly, the assignment helped me better understands global worldviews by making me aware of the problem, pushing me to research it, think about it, and make my own opinions on the topic. I grew my critical thinking skills in this project by using evidence and reasoning to guide my decision making. I also analyzed digital and print sources to determine validity and biases.I compared many different articles and sources to make sure that the information I was getting stayed steady. All in all, I think this assignment was very beneficial to my writing skills, and most importantly my cultural competence skills. I believe this essay really helped me grow not only as a writer, but it also broadened my world view.
