Assignment:
"1st piece - Portrait To Define Your Generation - Acrylic"
My Piece-
This was my first time using acrylic for a painting so it was a little bit different than what I'm used to. My piece represents gen z by showing the struggles our generation has to face and how we are responsible for cleaning up messes that the past generations started. On the left it shows different social media platforms that are popular. People use their platforms to spread awareness on important topics. There is also a black lives matter logo on the bottom because this is a very big part of gen z. It is one of the main social problems we are trying to fix. The girl in blue represents the ocean. I painted trash on her to represent all the plastic in the ocean. Her tears represent oil spills. The purple figure is wearing a mask to represent Covid and how that is a problem we are currently facing. He is looking out at a forest fire and a factory polluting the air. All of these things are problems that our generation needs to fight for and I think they are important in representing what our generation stands for.
Assignment:
"2nd piece - A self portrait of yourself within your generation - Acrylic"
My Piece-
For this piece I also used acrylic paint. It was a little bit easier this time now that I have used the paint before. My piece is of a meadow with a bunch of flowers that are all different. I thought this piece is a good representation of gen z and how I fit in. Everyone in gen z is different and there are a lot of different opinions, so I feel like everyone is welcome and we’re all one. The flowers show how everyone is so different, yet we are all still part of the same meadow. The meadow is sort of cartoonish to show that we are still young and childish, but the bleak colors and sort of muted tones in the flowers show that we also have a lot of responsibilities to take care of in reality.
Assignment:
"Stay within this theme of -your generation- and create a piece of your own design. You must explain how and why you chose the direction you chose and how it fits within this theme of Defining Your Generation. You may use any medium you'd like or multimedia. Please explain your piece and how and why you went in the direction you did and how it fits within the overall theme."
My Piece-
This was a multimedia piece, as there are drawing components and painting components. I used acrylic paint, markers, and pencil to complete this piece. The piece portrays a girl with black eyes and tape covering her mouth and a smile drawn over the tape. She has no color except for the red smile. This represents mental illness, or depression. Her eyes are black and her tears run out black because she feels empty on the inside. The tape covering her mouth shows that she can’t talk about it and the smile on top shows that everything is easy to cover up with a smile. The background represents the rest of the world. It is a cluttered, bright place with lots of opportunity, however, she is separated from it because she can’t seem to find her purpose. This piece fits in with defining our generation by shedding light on the private struggles most people go through. While our generation has been tasked with environmental, political, and many other challenges, mental health is one of the big ones that we are facing and trying to make more accepted.
