Cosmic Chemistry Project
Project Overview
This project was a 3-in-1, where we did three different mini projects, each relating to a different element of Cosmic Chemistry. There was a selection of nine different projects you could choose from, and my group chose the Verbal (Podcast), Artistic (Poster), and the Musical (Song). The Podcast went over the evidence of the Big Bang Theory, the Poster went over the lifespan of the sun, and the Song went over the composition of an atom. Each piece fulfilled a different element of content we are required to know as chemistry students.
Evidence of Work
Fission Impossible Podcast
Our Podcast featured three scientists who were instrumental to the development of the Big Bang Theory: Edwin Hubble, Ralph Alpher, and Robert Wilson. They explain their contributions to the theory, with interesting commentary throughout.
Lifespan of the Sun Poster
This poster goes through the different phases stars go through throughout their life. Currently, the son (our star) is in the Yellow Star Phase. Eventually, our solar system will freeze, as the sun turns into a White Dwarf.
Fusion N' Fission Song
This song goes through the construction of an atom, as well as fusion, fission, and radioactive decay. Here are the lyrics:
Fusion N' Fission
Atoms?????
What are they?!?!?!?!
How do they fuse?
How do they… fission?
And what’s a nucleus?
What’s it got to do with anything?
What makes it change?
Well, I guess I’ll tell you now
At one point there was nothing, then there was something
A bang, something that produced the things that make us
Atoms, the basic unit, contains the nucleus
The center, the making of it all so cool and such
it contains protons, neutrons, but wait not electrons
Electrons, instead, hover round the outside
Making big circles, hovering round the outside
Now let's take it to the chorus, where I let processes fly
When nuclei fuse they get much heavier
Create a new atom, make something spectacular
But when nuclei fission, it's a little bit different
They split in two but still make a new element
So, as you can see, Its easy to see
That nuclear chemistry is understood so easily
Fusion, and Fission
Making new elements since they be splitting
Now, let me explain something new
Decay, a process which affects a few
Nuclei break down, pushing energy through
Its Radioactive, let me further explain it to you
Its Spontaneous, Extraneous, Big Brain-ius
It makes a lot of sense if you’re smart like us
Radioactive Decay has never been sus
It’s just a natural process, like getting on a bus
Fission
Fussion
Radioactive
Decay
Atom
Nucleus
Synthesis
The real truth is
When nuclei fuse they get much heavier
Create a new atom, make something spectacular
But when nuclei fission, it's a little bit different
They split in two but still make a new element
So, as you can see, Its easy to see
That nuclear chemistry is understood so easily
Fusion, and Fission
Making new elements since they be splitting
Hell yea
That’s the song
That’s it, I don’t know what else you were expecting
I’m… I’m just gonna let the instrumental play out now
Reflection
This project was interesting in concept, but I feel like it was lacking in execution. While yes, my group was able to get each project done, I felt like we all had this severe sense of urgency going into it. As in, we only had a week to complete three projects, one of which was a full song. It was pretty stressful, and I feel like maybe giving us one more week to work on i would have been nice. Not even in class, but just giving us tutorial time during the next week. However, even with the time restraints, I feel like my group really worked well. Specifically, our Collaboration and Communication. I was lucky to be in a group which communicated throughout the week of work time, and collaborated on every step of the project. I feel like we all helped each other work better than we would've on our own, which isn't always the case in group projects.
Of course, there were also things I could've done better during this project. Specifically, I could benefit from working on my Conscientious Learning, and my Cultural Competence. Since this project was essentially three mini projects, my group found that the best way to divide the work up, so each person focused on one of the three projects. I could've better self-managed, and been more competent of the other elements of this project. I worked mainly on the song, so I have very good understanding of the composition of atoms, as well as the concepts of fusion and fission. But, I essentially didn't do any work on the sun poster, since we couldn't work together on something like that. So, while I learned the content eventually, I'm much less well-versed in it than Maggie, who actually made the poster. Overall, this was a cool concept for a project, but it could've been executed slightly better.
