“Creativity is contagious, pass it on” – Albert Einstein
Creativity: The ability to develop, choose, and integrate novel, unconventional, and innovative approaches to teaching and learning.
Teachers push students to use creativity and learn to adapt, think outside the box, and find new ways to solve problems. It is also important to use creativity as a teacher, to keep students engaged and learning. Below you will find different ideas I've used in my student teaching, or have seen used by directing teachers.
Above, you will find a lesson plan created with a classmate, which combines science and art. In this lesson, students will identify the characteristics of different habitats and the animals that dwell in each habitat. Students will creatively showcase their understanding of one habitat and one or more of the habitat’s inhabitants using technological tools provided by the teacher.
In all of my fieldwork classes, I noticed that teachers used follow along videos often to include arts in their lessons.
Art for Kids Hub on Youtube is a great source of such videos. Their channel has many different videos at different levels and with themes (holidays, animals, transportation...), and teachers can always find something that interests all students.
Students love these, and are often very creative with them!
Another brain break activity I've seen used in class is a dance break. GoNoodle has huge library of dance videos with catchy songs and fun dance moves. These were particularly useful in distance learning, but can also be a great tool in person to get the students moving!
