Before beginning my nursing journey, I was unsure of how classes, exams, and clinicals were going to be like, but being paired with a nursing mentor helped me learn more about the nursing program, how to manage my time, and what Dominican has to offer. While embarking on my own journey, I wanted to offer the same support I received to other future nurses. In the Spring 2020 semester, as a Sophomore 2 nursing student, I joined the nursing peer mentor program at Dominican to not only provide support to my fellow nursing peers on their BSN journey, but to also provide guidance regarding nursing classes, study tips, clinicals, and suggest resources to help clarify their understanding beyond what is taught in class.
As a nursing peer mentor, I am oftentimes matched with a nursing student as requested through our Instagram page @DUnursingmentors or through completing the Google Form where the preference for their mentor's cohort can be recorded. Currently I am paired with four mentees, two sophomore 2's and two sophomore 1's, and keep in touch with them as needed such as for clinical registration. Beyond providing support for my mentees, I have also co-facilitated a few student panels. One of the panels I participated in included one for upcoming sophomore 2's which focused around questions regarding my clinical experience such as what to bring to clinicals, helpful resources to prepare for clinicals, and my personal experience at the clinical sites I chose. In the picture provided, is one of the virtual panels done in August 2020 for pre-nursing students at Dominican where we answered questions pertaining to our first year such as how we transitioned from the curriculum in high school to nursing school, best time to purchase textbooks, and helpful online resources.
As one of the members of the leadership team, I work with five of my colleagues on organizing meeting dates and discussion topics during our monthly meeting with nursing peer mentors, nursing panels for underclassmen students, networking and reaching out to pre-nursing and nursing students through our Instagram page to connect interested mentees with our mentors.
Other roles and responsibilities include:
Organizing clinical registration Q&A session for upcoming sophomore 2's and Questions Regarding Dominican's Nursing Program for upcoming sophomore 1's
Effectively communicating with nursing peer mentors and nursing faculty through emails
Arranging Doodle polls to communication with nursing peer mentors regarding availability for Q&A panels
Relaying vital updates and messages to nursing peer mentors through email and GroupMe group chat
Creating monthly meeting agendas through the school year
Working with peers on the leadership team to pair interested nursing students with nursing peer mentors
