What steps did you take to create and apply UVW maps for your model?
First of all, I turned my model into a editable poly. Secondly, I applied the "Unwrap UVW" modifier to the same model. Once the UVW Map was open, I scaled all of the islands down by about 200%, so that they would be small enough to have a rather large amount of space between them. After shrinking them all down, I split all of the islands apart, with what I believe is called the "Break Apart" tool. After I was happy with how the islands were sorted, I saved the UVW map as a jpeg. Then, I opened the JPEG in photoshop, and applied images over the islands. Finally, I turned the photoshopped uvw map into a bitmap, which I then applied to the model with the material editor.
What challenges did you encounter while working with UVW mapping and materials? How did you overcome them?
I only encountered one challenge, and it was just that I didn't understand what we were supposed to be doing. I overcame this by asking Mr. Bourgeois for help. Luckily he did more than just explain it to me, he physically showed me what I was supposed to do and how to utilize the break apart tool.
How did using materials and textures enhance the realism or visual appeal of your model?
I used a metal texture design, which was originally silver, but I turned green to match how an actual tank would look like. This made my take look more visual appealing and realistic than a solid color tank would look like for example. I even used an image of treads to make it look more realistic.
What is one skill you learned during this project that you feel most proud of? Why?
I 'm proud of the fact that I learned how to set up UVW Maps. I'm proud of this because I was able to understand it pretty fast after some help, and I was able to finish the Textured Tank assignment on time. Also, this skill is important to have because it seems like there are so many different situations that UVW Mapping can be useful in. For example, you have a model that you need to apply a lot of different colors to, or images to. Just Unwrap the uv map, save the image, then use a photo editing app and the rest is just a piece of cake.
How do you see yourself using UVW mapping and materials in future projects, whether for school or personal use?
I think UVW mapping is the best way to apply textures/images that we have learned so far. I'm most definetly going to use it when I need to apply multiple images to a model to make it look realistic. However, I feel like I should find more realistic or better looking images to make my model look actually visually appealing before I UWV Map even more.
