Climate change refers to changes in temperature and weather patterns over time. According to NOAA's 2021 Annual Climate Report, the temperature of both land and ocean has increased at a rate of 0.08 degrees Celsius per decade since 1880, and the rate has more than doubled since 1981, to 0.18 degrees Celsius. These shifts can occur naturally and as a result of human activity. Human activities such as open burning, deforestation, and the use of fossil fuels all contribute to global warming and climate change. The number for climate change has been set at 1.5 degrees Celsius.
We were required to play The Climate Game during Week 7 of the ENG3101 Engineering Seminar, in which we played the role of a person in a position of authority in order to prevent the deteriorating effects of climate change. The game's mechanics are as follows: you must devise solutions to combat climate change and reduce carbon dioxide emissions, but doing so will cost us points. The goal is to reach 2050 while staying below 1.5 degrees Celsius.
Based on the outcomes of my first game, my actions to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and combat climate change have been effective.
Moreover, in comparison to the previous game, I reduced carbon dioxide emissions considerably more during the second play. This might be because more major risks are being taken to avoid conservatively batting it.
Finally, my knowledge and understanding of climate change were not as profound as they were after I played this game. I discovered that we needed to start early in order to care for our planet in the future. The most important lesson I've taken away from this exercise is that we must not ignore climate change, which is a serious problem. Our planet is gradually dying. As a result, we must begin caring for our planet today so that future generations can enjoy the wonders of nature.
On a scale of 1-5, I highly agree that playing digital role-playing games like this helps me be more conscious and informed about the topic of climate change since it has a lot of new information that we can learn. On a scale of 1-5, I highly believe that playing digital game role-playing like this enhances my decision-making abilities by forcing me to consider what I would do if we were in that person's shoes. I also realised that every decision has ramifications. On a scale of 1-5, I rank 5-strongly agree that playing digital game role-playing like this helps me grow my abilities as a future engineer, as solving real-world problems is crucial for engineers.
