Synoptic Game Ideas
Idea #1
Myth reference:
"According to a legend, Taira no Masakado (the first Samurai) was beheaded in Kyoto when returning to Kantō for revenge from being framed for many crimes. The legend then starts to become a myth when Masakado’s severed head that The Emperor put on display, slowly became angry and one night flew away. Then later landed in a small fishing village called Shibasaki in the town of Edo, where some fishermen buried it and built a shrine on the spot where they found it. Many years later the town suffered huge thunderstorms on a regular basis, this was said to be believed the spirit of Masakado was the cause and was haunting the people’s lives.”
Game concept:
A survival, horror, puzzle game that includes a headless Samurai ghost based off an old Japanese myth / legend "Taira no Masakado" that hunts down the player whilst they have to solve a puzzle, find keys to open up the Tomb of "Masakado" and destroy the severed head to free Tokyo of his spirit.
Art style:
Black and white - colour filter.
Assets have normal coloured textures - game engine will change player view to black and white. Only the Samurai and the player's blood in a death animation has colour.
Conclusion:
This idea for a game is my most favourite concept as it is very interesting and I think the player will feel really engaged with the art style, tone of the story and setting. The legend is also not well known in western culture so this concept will also teach the player something new. The rating for this game will have to be for a more mature audience as restricting the violence and horror segments would affect the tone of the story. My inspiration for the art style is from the game Ghost of Tsushima and my inspiration for the gameplay loop is from the game Dead by Daylight. For the next idea, instead of working backwards I will chose to find a well known myth first then build a story and game concept around it. Although I do really like the idea of the game player view, colour filter being set to black and white so I will keep that as a future idea.
Idea #2
Myth reference:
"Egyptian mythology focuses on the fundamental order of the universe, explaining the patterns of the natural world through divine actions. Of particular importance are the creation myths, the constant struggle against disorder, and the cycles of death and rebirth."
Game concept:
The player will navigate a series of trap-filled labyrinths as an adventurer seeking the treasures guarded by Anubis (the god of the afterlife). Players must solve puzzles, avoid deadly traps and face off against otherworldly guardians to progress through the labyrinth and claim a prize.
Art style:
Worm colours, assets being very detailed.
Conclusion:
My original idea for this game was going to have a similar game concept to Idea #1 although there is already a game that is an Egyptian survival horror called FOREWARNED. That being the case I have to be really careful as I don't want to make a clone. This idea is more of a backup plan in case there are any issues with the first idea.
