The unconventional dimensions of the wall presented a fascinating challenge, evoking a sense akin to me being a speaker in a TED Talk. Though the task was undeniably demanding, it was simultaneously enjoyable and ultimately gratifying.
Space plays a paramount role in determining the success of my design project. The initial attempt successfully achieved the desired level of darkness and projection brightness within the given space. Nevertheless, this effort fell short of achieving the optimal projection distance or area envisioned.
Due to the shortfall in achieving the desired projected area, I found myself in a state of uncertainty regarding the project's overarching trajectory. A turning point came when an in-class studio activity emerged. This activity involves a concise presentation of my plans for the Develop stage within a tight 1-minute timeframe, adopting a speed-dating format with other peers. This concise exercise forced me to look past the uncertainty to think strategically, selecting the most essential points to convey within the tight time constraints. Through the repeated practice of sharing my vision, I have gained a heightened clarity concerning my project's direction, equipped with a well-defined sense of purpose, and aware of what I aim to accomplish within the available space, time, and resources.
Following the studio activity, I resolved to make another attempt within the given space. By repositioning the projector further away, I successfully attained the desired projected area. With the assistance of my peers to measure the wall dimensions, I was able to establish precise specifications, which allowed me to create designs that perfectly spread the projected wall.
After meticulous preparations, numerous trials, and a series of experiments, I am now fully equipped with a comprehensive plan. This plan entails the creation of 5-8 animated posters, each intricately connected to 5-8 established narratives. The primary objective for each poster is to visually capture the essence of the message conveyed by the corresponding poem, while also eliciting distinct emotions, feelings, or atmospheres.
In addition to the visual aspect, the project will incorporate ambient sound and narration. These audio elements will work in tandem with the visuals, gradually unfolding the narratives. Together, these components will coalesce to form a cohesive whole, resembling a short guided meditation session, accordingly improving the participants’ well-being through an enhanced sense of belonging. This session will immerse participants in an abstract journey, mirroring the experiences of an international student, from their initial steps to an envisioned future.
The In-class Experience Prototype successfully met the predefined considered PDS metrics, encompassing either marginal or ideal criteria values, especially the spatial aspects. Encouragingly, the feedback received was predominantly positive, with minor suggestions for enhancing typography utilisation and recommendations for the inclusion of complementary printed materials.
