ASVAB

Who should take this test?  Those interested in joining the military or work force.

What does it test?  The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery is the most widely used multiple-aptitude test battery in the world. The ASVAB measures your strengths, weaknesses and potential for future success in four domains: verbal, math, science and technical, and spatial. The ASVAB includes tests in 10 areas: general science (GS), arithmetic reasoning (AR), word knowledge (WK), paragraph comprehension (PC), mathematics knowledge (MK), electronics information (EI), auto information (AI), shop information (SI), mechanical comprehension (MC) and assembling objects (AO).

Where & when do you take the test? The test will be given twice a year at WHS during the school day. Listen to the announcements for sign-ups.

Why is it necessary? The ASVAB helps the DoD not just determine whether you are a good fit to join the service, but also which service branch you might be best for and even what military jobs you can hold after you finish basic training or boot camp. The better your ASVAB score, the broader your options.

PSAT

Preliminary SAT (PSAT) 8/9: The PSAT 8/9 is a relatively new exam intended to help eighth- and ninth-grade students plan a path to college. It is similar to other tests in the SAT Suite of Assessments, but it is important to note that it is not the same exam as the PSAT 10 or PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. One significant difference among the PSAT 8/9, the PSAT/NMSQT and SAT is that this exam will not directly affect students' college applications or scholarship opportunities. Instead, the goal is to expose students to the different kinds of questions commonly found on higher-stakes tests in the years to come.

PSAT 10: Is the same test as the PSAT/NMSQT. This exam is given to tenth grade students. It serves as a practice test and its results will also let students know which Advanced Placement (AP) classes they will most likely be successful in.

PSAT/NMSQT: This is the test most people think of when they hear “PSAT.” Administered in the fall of junior year, it’s the exact same test as the PSAT 10—except that a sufficiently high score on the PSAT/NMSQT can qualify you for a National Merit Scholarship.

Should I take the ACT or SAT?

Most colleges and universities will accept scores from either the SAT or ACT, and do not favor one test over the other. That said, college-bound students are increasingly taking  both the SAT and ACT.  Changes made to the SAT in 2016 have made it easier than ever to prep for both tests concurrently—and earn competitive scores on both! The best way to decide if taking the SAT, ACT, or both tests is right for you is to take a timed  full-length practice test  of each type. Since the content and style of the SAT and ACT are very similar, factors like how you handle time pressure and what types of questions you find most challenging can help you determine which test is a better fit.  QUIZ: SAT, ACT, or Both?

ACT

What is it? The ACT is an entrance exam used by most colleges and universities to make admissions decisions. It is a multiple-choice, pencil-and-paper test administered by ACT, Inc. The purpose of the ACT test is to measure a high school student's readiness for college, and provide colleges with one common data point that can be used to compare all applicants.
