As you might have inferred from the video, we are beginning a design project using the Engineering Design Process. We will be designing masks! What makes a mask work? Why do people wear masks? What makes a mask effective? These are all questions we will explore and we will even be creating our own masks from the comfort of our homes! We will look at these questions, create a brainstorm, build, and test our models. Some of you may have already made masks at home to wear in public. When you made the mask, you probably followed an established pattern or design in order to quickly accomplish the goal of being able to go somewhere such as the Commissary or Exchange. However, I am asking you to delve into your inner creative genius and come up with your own design using your own ideas and materials. The end product may not necessarily be something you would wear out in public, but it should be a test in expanding your own skills of ingenuity and inventiveness. Today, your job is simply to start considering some preliminary ideas of your own that you might want to try out.

In this project, you will explore this notion by seeing exactly what will pass through your mask, and what your mask can protect you from. Matter can come in different forms and different amounts of densities. This project explores the science behind the mask through the creation of your own mask using the Engineering Design Process.
