How to Use Fluency Practice Pages
Timed Fluency Reading Procedures.docx- Find someone to listen attentively to the reader.
- Choose a passage at the reader's current reading level.
- Get a timer.
- Download a WPM Chart below. Write your name at the top. In the "Comments" section, write the level of the passage. Record the date as month/day (ex: 4/13).
- Reader reads aloud the passage to the Listener, who times him/her for EXACTLY one minute. During this time, the Listener is also keeping track of (counting up) any errors the Reader makes while reading with appropriate pacing and expression (do NOT try to correct the Reader at this time). If the Reader gets stuck on a word, provide the word after waiting 3 seconds and keep going. Calculate the number of words read minus the errors. Errors include saying the wrong word or omitting words altogether. Record only the number of words read correctly in 1 minute. RECORD THIS INFORMATION ON THE WPM CHART.
- Repeat this procedure with the SAME PASSAGE 4x. Each time, record the number of words read correctly (with proper expression and pacing) on the WPM chart.
- Practice with one passage per week.
- After you have practiced with 2 different passages (2 week time period), send your completed WPM Chart to your teacher.
