1B Word Study Resources

Spelling (word study) (directions and examples)

Cut and sort directions - the student should have written their class number inside each box. The student cuts out each box with each word/picture. (*often times cutting is done at school) The student writes or places the headings (phonics or spelling categories) on the table or desk where they are working. Students name each word/picture and put it in the correct group. After all words/pictures are sorted, the student places the cut-out words/pictures back in their plastic bag, and puts in back in the plastic folder.

No peeking sort directions - the student lays out the spelling groups/headings (index cards) for this sort. Another person says each spelling word or names each picture and the student points to the group in which they think the word belongs. Continue until all words/pictures have been sorted. The objective of this activity is to be sure the student listens without seeing the word or picture. This will help them on their spelling test when they must listen to us say each word! If your child has pictures that match words, they could see the pictures and listen to words and point to the correct answer.

Sort and write sentences - the student sorts words into their groups on a table or desk. Students choose one (or more) spelling words and use the word(s) in a sentence. Please be sure to use a capital letter and period. :) Please also underline the spelling word(s) in each sentence! Students will write their sentences in their journals.

-at -ad -an

cat sad tan

mat bad can

sat mad van

Study directions - when the homework is "study." Students may practice their words in any way they choose. The important thing is to practice before Friday's test.

Practice test directions - Someone says each word for the student and the student writes each word in their copybook just like they're taking a test. :)

Give me a vowel directions - students sort their words, write them in their journal (in the correct groups) and circle or highlight the vowel(s) in each word.
