High School Music ACADEMICS OFFERED
IGCSE Music (Grades 9-10)
When studying the Cambridge IGCSE Music syllabus, learners listen to, perform and compose music, encouraging aesthetic and emotional development, self-discipline and, importantly, creativity. As a result, learners enhance their appreciation and enjoyment of music, an achievement that forms an ideal foundation for future study and enhances life-long musical enjoyment. Learners study music of all styles; each style is placed in its historical and cultural context, and they are encouraged to be perceptive, sensitive and critical when listening. Although the majority of the syllabus examines Western European music, the music of other cultures is always represented.
IGCSE Music Requirements & Prerequisites
Instrumental ability of post-Grade 4 Trinity/ABRSM standard must be reached by the end of the course in order to meet Cambridge performance exam requirements. Additionally, students must be confident with music theory and able to compose using traditional notation. Students must therefore be able to demonstrate the ability to read music, play to a minimum of Grade 2/3 standard and understand basic elements of music theory before enrolling on this course. Where in doubt, the Music department are able to assess aptitude for IGCSE Music on a case by case basis.
It is expected that students will enroll in weekly instrumental lessons, either through Saint Maur's peripatetic tutors or through private instrumental tutors for the duration of their course. Students are also expected to participate in at least one extra-curricular musical ensemble and to perform at school concerts and events. Students are also strongly encouraged to develop basic keyboard skills. Access to Sibelius notation software and having a MIDI keyboard at home is advised in order to complete composition homework.
