Welcome to the 2024-2025 School Year! I am so excited to share all the fun things that we are doing in class. Check back periodically for a look inside the classroom!
7th grader designed carnival games to conclude their probability unit. Starting with the theoretical probability, students predicted the outcomes. Then we invited their classmates over to play the games and conduct trials of their experiment. Finally students reflected and calculated the experimental probability and described how it compared to their original prediction. Nothing better than a carnival on the last week of school!
6th grade ended their year designing an Amusement Park! Each student created a map of their park and all the attractions inside. There were roller coasters, concession stands, and even a ferris wheel! Students were able to demonstrate their knowledge of area and perimeter as they calculated the cost of materials.
Parallelograms! Triangles! Trapezoids! The 6th graders spent this week classifying polygons and solving for area. Collaborating with our group is a great way to learn from each other. Students love to collaborate in class.
8th graders are classifying numbers as rational or irrational numbers as we near the end of the school year. Then they are organizing those numbers from least to greatest! Students used great communication skills to discuss the final locations of each number.
6th graders are plotting away on coordinate planes! Each student is creating a mystery picture (collection of ordered pairs) that when graphed in the correct order, create a picture. There are a lot of meme mystery pictures, so prepare for the results!
7th Graders jumped into the Surface Area and Volume unit by calculating surface area of rectangular prisms. The rectangular prisms took the form of kleenex boxes that they flattened into nets. By solving each of the faces for area, students were able to combine each area to form the surface area!
The 8th graders' Stock Market Program is coming to an end next month. Before it ends, students learned about careers in finance from Mark, our partner from Charles Schwab. There are so many opportunities for finance related jobs and students were able to ask questions about fields they are interested in.
6th Graders worked in groups to find equivalent algebraic expressions this week. Using the Distributive Property and Commutative Property, students were able to match expressions that were equivalent. This is an important foundational skill for Algebra as students are thinking ahead!
Which strategy is the best to solve systems of equations?? This week students debated which one was best by creating an advertisement for their strategy. The 8th graders did a great job arguing and defending themselves.
Happy Pi Day! 7th Graders did an investigation to discover the Circumference of a circle. They used a string to go around the outside of a circle and then straightened it out to measure the full length.
It was 70 degrees and sunny yesterday which means our stained glass windows were on full display for everyone to see! The 8th graders used their graphing linear equations skills from in conjunction with their knowledge of church arcitexture from religion to create vibrant stained glas windows. Their final projects are proudly displayed on the windows for all to see.
8th Graders are collaborating in their Systems of Equations unit by creating an anchor chart. Students organized 10 systems into categories based on which strategy would be best to solve them. Between Graphing, Substitution, and Elimination there is always a strategy to help but Elimination seems to be a crowd favorite.
7th Graders are becoming masters at solving equations and inequalities! With our Module coming to a close, they reviewed by matching inequalities to their solutions and graphs. Working in partners allowed them to work on their collaboration and communication skills.
6th grade is beggining to learn about Percentages! Percents are skills that we use in our daily life from sales to stats! Today we focused on visual percents mainly in art. Students created drawings and then determined what percent of their drawing is each color. We have some creative mathematicians in our class!
7th Graders are getting ready for Algebra by perfecting their PreAlgebra skills. We started solving equations at the beginning of the new year and have quickly gone to multi-step equations. Partners are pictured solving an equations puzzle by matching equations and answers until they get to the end! The confidence in problem solving was on display!
6th Grade recently concluded their Fraction Module with a Baking Project. Each student chose a recipe that means a lot to them and converted the serving size to 4 different group sizes. When they were all done, they presented their projects, and some students even brought in their recipe to share! They had a great time preparing their projects, but an even better time enjoying the results!
The 6th Graders have been working on their fraction operations. They are becoming masters at adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions. To practice, we played a game of Blooket. It is hard to remember all the fraction rules, but everyone is doing a great job!
Big Sale Alert! 7th Graders created their own stores in conjunction with our unit on Percents. They had to mark up their products and then calculate an opening day sale prices. In the end, they created a flyer to advertise their sale, and they turned out awesome!
Every year, the Big Shoulders Fund sponsors a Stock Market Program. About once a month, volunteers from Houlihan Lokey visit our 8th Graders to discuss financial literacy and the stock market. This week, we had our first class where we discussed all the different ways to save money and what people start to save for. In a few weeks we will start the Stock Market Competition!
There are a lot of opportunities to work with our classmates in Math class. The first week of school, the 8th Graders spent time developing our "Group Work Standards" for the year. They worked on the 31derful task, as pictured, to determine the criteria of what good group work looked and sounded like. There were a lot of trials and errors, but in the end, they came up with a concise and clear list of expectations that we will use for the rest of the year.
As seen in the 2023-2024 School Year!
The Probability Carnival is in full swing! 7th grade students made their own carnival games in class to test the theoretical probability against the experimental probability of the outcomes.
Once a month, the entire 8th grade gets together for a lesson on the stock market and handling money. We were able to invest $3000 with the help of the Big Shoulders Fund. Each meeting we discuss if we need to make changes to our portfolio or if we should hold our stocks. Crocs are the 8th graders favorite shoes AND has been the best stock in our portfolio!
Fractions, Decimals, and Percents all can represent the same amount! In a chart of 100 squares, students colored in each box to create designs that reflected them. With each new box colored in, it increase the fraction, decimal, and percent of that color in the drawing as a whole. A great introduction into our Percent unit.
8th Grade is cruising through Algebra! They learned about Slope-Intercept Form (y=mx+b) and used that to create a stained glass window of lines! With different slopes and different y-intercepts, students created cross sections and colored them to resemble a stained class window. They turned out beautiful and will be hung on our classroom window for all to see!
Our 8th graders are well on their way in Algebra! Students have been working in pairs to solve equations and graph lines. Being open-minded to other's ideas is a necessary skill to practice inside and outside of the classroom.
During our Transformation Unit, students transformed their own designs!
The transformations include rotation, reflection, and translation.
They spent time designing a picture that represents their identity.
Some designs include basketball numbers, favorite animals, and candy!
6th Graders love to work together in class! They were reviewing for their fraction test by answering questions as a group. THey rely on each other and use each other for support. They are fraction masters now!
As seen as the 2022-2023 School Year!
6th graders are making Robots! Well Robots made out rectangular prisms that they folded from nets! As an end to the Surface area and Volume unit, our sudents folded paper to create these figures. They also calculated the volume and surface area of each rectanfular prism. Look how cool they turned out!
The 7th grade math students are into their geometry unit focusing on area! To transition from area to surface area, students deconstructed boxes we use everyday. We had tissue boxes, cereal boxes, candy boxes etc. They had to measure and calculate the area of each face and combine them all to develop surface area.
All of our 8th graders have been participating in a Stock Market project over the course of the school year. They built a portfolio and tracked its progress to try and earn the biggest gains. As the project is coming to a close, we met with Mark our mentor from Charles Schwab, to discuss our portfolio and talk about different careers in finance. Financial literacy is important and we hope our 8th graders can take these skills with them as they leave for high school and beyond!
8th grade finished their systems of equations unit with an advertising project! Students worked in groups to advertise their strategy as the best. With elimination, graphing, and substitution there are many options to pick from but what is the best?! Students tried to argue why theirs was better than the other... the best strategy is still up for debate!
6th grade is working on creating mystery coordinate plane pictures! They are listing ordered pairs that when you graph and connect the points, they create a picture!
Pictures include logos, emojis, and original designs!
These examples include the heart eye emoji and a softball field. These drawings have to accurate otherwise the picture will not resemble the intended idea.
6th Graders are practicing solving numerical and algebraic expressions before their quiz this week. Their favorite game to play is Jeopardy! Students play in teams and love to collaborate with their partners and correct their mistakes.
8th graders are practicing graphing lines by creating stained glass windows!
By graphing over 15 lines on a single coordinate plane, students creat different sized spaces to emulate a stained glass window.
Students used a variety of slopes and intercepts to create a pattern or visual with their lines.
Here are some of the final copies, look at the light shine through!
6th graders are discussing Percents! As an introduction into the unit, students are creating designs and discussing what percent of each drawing is a certain color. Percents are out of 100 so each square represented 1% of the drawing. Here is them working hard to create their designs!
The 7th graders are in the midst of their expressions and equations units. We have taken a pause from our daily lessons to create our own expressions and equations! Students are creating calendars with one expression or eqution on each date. They are a work in progress, we will check back in when they are done!
The 8th graders are beginning their solving equations unit and wanted to share how excited they are! Solving linear equations is the basis for Algebra so these students are preparing themselves for high school math. Look at those happy smiles on picture day!
7th Grade completed their Dream Room Project this week within our Proportional Reasoning Unit. They spent their final day reflecting on the process and leaving positive feedback on their peers drawings. We loved seeing how far we've come since our rough draft.
8th grade participated in a gallery walk this week to present their transformations! Students went around the room and left posititve comments about all their hard work!
Each design was meant to represent identity in some way. It could be through roles and relationships, likes and interests, or beliefs and values.
Here is a completed reflection by one of the 8th graders!
A gallery walk is a great way for students to see what each other has been working on in class. It allows each person to present and recieve feedback without standing in front of the class.
7th Graders are working hard in their Proportional Reasoning Unit. They are using their knowledge of proportions to create scale drawings. First is a scale drawing of our classroom! The first step of the scale drawing is to gather our measurments. Here they are using yard sticks and rulers to measure our room in feet, next week we will start the drawing!
In the first weeks of school, all of the math classes have been working on setting our group work expectations for the year. In order to set these, students worked in groups to complete various tasks while following these expectations. The task pictured here is called 21 where students try to create a 5x5 grid of numbers in which every row and every column adds up to 21. The task proved to be pretty difficult and caused students to communicate multiple strategies and listen to each other's ideas. Now we have the group expectations for the rest of the year!
