Before you can participate in the Travel Lottery and potentially enroll in a Travel course, there are a number of important requirements you must fulfill by their respective deadlines.
Students who fail to complete one or more of the pre-registration requirements will be ineligible to enroll in a January Term Travel course.
In the spring, students can come and meet our Travel course instructors and learn about 3-4 of this year’s offerings at each meeting. These are a great opportunity to find out where all our courses are going and to see what catches your interest!
Completing the Jan Term Travel Lottery & Scholarship Form is the first official step to beginning the registration process!
You must submit this form in order to enroll in a Travel course. This form closes on Thursday, Sep. 19.
This form collects:
Name
SMC ID#
Course(s) of interest
Class standing
Scholarship application
Optional
Scholarship deadline: Wednesday, Sep. 11
Submission of this form does not guarantee enrollment in any course but is required for registration. You can submit more than once to update your response.
This form closes on Thursday, Sep. 19.
Qualifying students can receive an award of 75% of the course fee for their enrolled course.
Eligibility requirements include:
Submitted FAFSA
No previous experience studying abroad with January Term or Study Abroad
Minimum 3.0 GPA
Priority is based on class standing.
The deadline to apply for the scholarship is 5:00 pm, Wednesday, Sep. 11.

If you applied for the Jan Term Travel Scholarship by the September 11 deadline, then today’s the day to learn if you won!
On Monday, Sep. 16, you will receive an email confirming all courses for which you have received instructor approval and a reminder to submit your travel deposit between the morning of Wednesday, Sep. 18, and end of day on Thursday, Sep. 19.
Submitting a travel deposit and receiving clearance from both the SMC Business Office and the Student Success Office are required in order to enroll in a Travel course.
This will require:
Submission of your course deposit to the Business Office within the deposit window
A zero balance on your account or being current on your payment plan
Minimum 2.0 GPA
Good academic standing
If you wish to opt out of the Registration Lottery for Jan Term Travel 2025, you can complete the form here before 8:00 am Monday, Sep. 23.
Students who opt out will not receive any more communications about the Jan Term Travel registration process for the current cycle and will be ineligible to enroll in any JT Travel courses for 2025.
Students who do not opt out are committed to the Travel Registration Lottery process and will be responsible for any remaining course fees if they enroll in a course. If a student does not ultimately enroll in a travel course, their deposit is credited to their student account
At 5:00 pm on Friday, all students who submitted the Travel Lottery Form and are eligible to enroll in a Travel course will receive an email containing:
Their registration number
Their expected Lottery time slot on Monday (seniors only) or Tuesday
All courses for which they are eligible to enroll
Their course rankings
Instructions for Lottery participation
Students are ineligible for any courses for which they have not:
Attended an Information Session
Received instructor approval
Students are unable to participate in the Lottery entirely if they have not:
Submitted the Lottery Entry form
Submitted a travel deposit
Received institutional clearances
All eligible students with senior standing are assigned a registration number at random, then juniors, then sophomores, then first-years. This number represents each student’s spot in the Lottery queue.
From the courses in which you are eligible to enroll, you are provided a sorted list based on the initial rankings you indicated on the Travel Lottery Form.
The order of the courses on this list will be used in the Lottery on Monday to indicate your default preference for enrollment.
