A learning difficulty that affects social interaction so that students find it difficult to communicate with adults and peers.
Students typically have difficulties with:
communicating – processing dialogue; understanding facial gestures/humour
socialising – working in a group; showing empathy; may shows signs of aggression
flexibility of thought – narrow interests or obsessions; takes things literally
Teaching Strategies
Prepare learner for new concepts prior to lesson
Use Visual aids or prompts
Set clear goals
Step by step worksheets
Calm time or rest breaks
Clear routines
Short simple instructions and language
Directed questions
Explain any changes to routine prior to lesson
Writing frames
Model social skills
Structured and consistent approach
Model that making mistakes is part of the learning process
Base work around pupil interests
Direct conversations back to the work
Immediate reward systems
Say what you mean (explain double meanings, avoid sarcasm etc.)
Minimise use of abstract language.
Ensure that preferred methods of communication (as well as level of eye contact) known by all staff within school
Preparation for change of activity or lesson
Delivery of information slowed down with time given to allow processing
Additional time given to effectively explain and support pupils to ask and answer questions
Systematic organisation of independent learning tasks and activities
Clear rewards and sanctions – including motivators
Overt expectations made explicit
Calm learning environment
Prompt cards for group roles and group work/ conversation skills
Access to time out area or distraction free environment
