A behavioural disorder that is characterised by uncooperative, defiant, negative, irritable and annoying behaviours towards parents, peers, teachers and other authority figures.
Students typically have difficulties with:
Frequent temper tantrums
Excessive arguments with adults
Refusal to comply with requests and/ or instructions
Behaviour intended to annoy or upset others
Accepting responsibility
Easily annoyed by others
Frequently has an angry attitude
Speaking harshly or unkindly
Seeking revenge
Teaching Strategies
Regular reminders of understanding and respecting needs of the pupil
A reward system
Opportunities to demonstrate their strengths
Prepare pupil before a change to routine
Praise positive behaviour
Reminder that you are not the cause of their defiance
Rest breaks
Agree a calm area or safe haven
Short simple instructions and language
Four positive comments to one negative
Use signals for when a pupil becomes agitated

Model behavioural skills and talk through negative behaviour after it happens
Label the behaviour - not the pupil
