St. Martha Catholic School – 4th Grade Physical Education & Health Curriculum
At St. Martha Catholic School, we believe that physical activity and health education are essential to the development of the whole child—body, mind, and spirit. Our 4th Grade Physical Education and Health program is designed to provide students with meaningful opportunities to grow in physical competence, personal health awareness, and social responsibility.
Our Physical Education program supports early psychomotor development by offering dynamic, hands-on experiences. Students will combine locomotor and manipulative skills with increasing control and confidence, while learning to engage in physical activity with purpose and enjoyment. Emphasis is placed on developing coordination, fitness, and respectful social interaction.
Curriculum Goals:
Demonstrate competency in movement and body control
Perform locomotor patterns in repeatable sequences
Understand the value of physical activity for enjoyment, fitness, and healthy challenge
Develop flexibility and muscular endurance through structured fitness activities
Respond to winning and losing with respect and effective communication
Strengthen social development through teamwork, cooperation, and sportsmanship
The Health component complements Physical Education by helping students understand how to take care of their bodies and make informed decisions about their well-being. Lessons are developmentally appropriate and promote awareness of personal health and hygiene.
Curriculum Goals:
Develop personal health habits, including hygiene, nutrition, and physical self-care
Understand the basic functions of body systems, with a focus on the brain, heart, lungs, skin, and digestive system
Explore emotional health, including how to identify feelings and express them appropriately
Learn the importance of rest, hydration, and safety in maintaining a healthy body
Discuss age-appropriate topics in disease prevention, such as handwashing and healthy habits
Recognize the connection between healthy choices and overall wellness
This integrated curriculum nurtures students' physical, social, and emotional growth, equipping them with the tools they need to lead active, healthy, and respectful lives—both now and in the future.
