Thinking with Patterns

Challenge 1: 

• Ten kindergarteners need to sit on the rug for a read-aloud.  Each rectangle is large enough for a kindergartener to sit comfortably. Where would you tell them to sit, so they have a good view of the book? 

Challenge 2: 

• Recess has just started, and you feel like playing by yourself for a while.  Where are some places in the playground you can go to?  Where are some places you would not want to go to?  (Each green smiley face represents one kindergartener.) 

Challenge 3: 

• What do these three animals have in common?  Which parts are the same?

• If we wanted to change the _________ to a __________, what would we need to add or take away?

Challenge 4: 

• What kind of a pattern can you draw? 

• What parts will be the same? What parts will be different?
