OCD Disorder
Obsessive-compulsive disorder is a disorder in which people have recurring, unwanted thoughts, ideas, or sensations (obsessions) that make them feel driven to do something repetitively.
The 4 types of OCD are:
· contamination.
· perfection.
· doubt/harm.
· forbidden thoughts.
Contamination:
Individuals who develop contact contamination OCD, typically experience an overwhelming feeling of distress, discomfort or a sensation of uncleanliness, when they come into physical contact with substances, objects, people or animals, that are viewed as 'contaminants, ' usually containing germs, dirt, disease etc..
Perfection:
Obsessions often seen with “perfectionism” as a form of OCD include: An overwhelming fear of making mistakes; an intense need for things to be “perfect” or “done right” – may or may not be accompanied by a fear that harm will come to oneself or others if things are not done perfectly.
Doubt/Harm:
Harm OCD is a term used to describe OCD when intrusive thoughts focus on the possibility of harming others. The thoughts can take the form of fear you'll harm someone close to you, a fear you'll harm a stranger, or a fear you've harmed someone in the past and didn't realize or don't remember it.
Forbidden thoughts:
Forbidden or intrusive thoughts are thoughts that enter your consciousness without warning. They are often graphic and offensive. You cannot control these thoughts.
How to cope with OCD:
1. Practice 1: Postpone Your Worries.
2. Practice 2: Change the Ways You Obsess.
3. Practice 3: Let Go of Worries and Physical Tensions.
4. Practice 4: Create Worry Time.
5. Practice 5: Create a Short Repeating Recording of Brief Obsessions.
6. Practice 6: Create a Recording of Extended Obsessions
Exercise is a natural and effective anti-anxiety treatment that helps to control OCD symptoms by refocusing your mind when obsessive thoughts and compulsions arise. For maximum benefit, try to get 30 minutes or more of aerobic activity on most days.
The main medications prescribed are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). These can help by increasing the levels of a chemical called serotonin in your brain. You may need to take the medication for 12 weeks before you notice any effect.
Celebrity's with OCD
Some of the most known celebrities cuffed from OCD. People like Howie Mandel, Jessica Alba , David Beckham, Cameron Diaz, Howard Stern and Leonardo DiCaprio.
"The Oscar-winning heartthrob has admitted that he often feels compelled to walk through doorways numerous times and step on sidewalk stains left by using chewing gum, though he claims he is able to keep these tendencies under control with some practice and regularity.
“I’m able to say at some point, ‘OK, you’re being ridiculous, stop stepping on every gum stain you see. You don’t need to do that. You don’t need to walk 20 feet back and put your foot on that thing. Nothing bad is going to happen,’” DiCaprio stated."
"A thought that enters my head — good, bad, or indifferent — isn't any different from anybody else's. The problem is, it's like a sticking record, and that thought continuously goes through and through like a loop. And I have a compulsion to act on it. The simplest example I can give you is: I don't think I locked the door, so I go back and I check the door like everyone else. And then I still don't think I locked the door, so I go back and check the door again. And I still think I didn't lock the door. And I can go back, like, 30 times. Intellectually, I know that I've checked the door 29 times before, but I can't stop myself from going back and checking it again and again and again."
