what is body image
Having a positive body image means being comfortable with the way your body looks and not feeling the need to change anything about it. It means you have realized that looking a certain way is not attached to being popular, being smart or anything else.
A person with a negative body image describes a person with a negative view of themselves. They want to change the way they look.
Someone might not like the way they look because of :
The media portraying one specific body type as healthy and beautiful
Society ( location, culture) and it's expectations
Comments from family, friends or other people regarding your appearance
Emotions and hormonal fluctuations
How does body image affect someone's mental health
If someone has a good body image, they are happy with the way they look and they accept themselves for who they are. They take care of themselves and they are aware that their body doesn't reflect on who they are- they accept their imperfections.
A person with a negative view of themselves will often place highly unrealistic expectations on themselves. They think that there is something wrong with them and their strive to be perfect leads them to believe that one disappointment makes them a failure. It can often stop them from going out and having fun, causes them to worry about what they will wear and overall does not allow them to be themselves. Negative thoughts will only grow and this unhealthy habit can put you at higher risk to develop anxiety and depression.
Constantly weighing yourself, checking your appearance in the mirror, putting yourself in comparison to others, downgrading the way you look and being anxious about your appearance are common habits among people with a negative body image.
