What is bipolar
Bipolar Disorder is a serious mental illness that is considered a “mood disorder”. An individual will usually go through long or short phases of either depression or mania.
"Mania is a psychological condition that causes a person to experience unreasonable euphoria, very intense moods, hyperactivity, and delusions"
Symptoms of Bipolar Disorder include:
Depression:
● Sadness
● Hopeless
● Irritability
● No energy
● Emptiness
● Guilt
● Delusional
● Suicidal thoughts
Mania:
● Feelings of happiness
● Quick speech
● Energetic
● Self importance
● Easily distracted
● Agitated
● Not sleeping or eating
● Impulsive ideas
The fluctuation between these two moods are often referred to as “episodes”. Between these episodes there can be phases of “normality” too. A Rapid Cycle is a very fast change in the mood with no “normal” phase in between. A Mixed State is feeling both symptoms of depression and mania ant the same time.
Although there is no cure for bipolar disorder many people with the disorder can go long periods of time with no symptoms. There are treatments to help with “episodes” and symptoms . One treatment is medication, they help with preventing episodes of mania, hypomania and depression.
Treatment for bipolar disorder
One treatment is medication which help with preventing episodes of mania, hypomania and depression. The medication is called mood stabilizers. Another treatment in psychological treatment.
Other things you can do when feeling low is exercise ( when choosing exercises to do, it is recommended that you do one that make you focus such as walking, swimming and yoga, rather then ones that stop and start )
Other activities include gardening, listening or singing to music, playing an instrument, reading or writing a book, walking your dog

When living with bipolar disorder it is important to have patience with yourself. Staying active and eating well is always important as it can give you a routine. If someone tells you they have bipolar disorder and explain some triggers they have, be understanding of this and their boundaries.
