Repenting with Christ

We continued our Lenten journey looking ahead to the 3rd Sunday of Lent and the theme of repentance. The parable of the fruitless fig tree helped us to understand that Jesus explains we must all take account for our actions and behaviour. We spoke to children about one of the ways we help each other to do that - using restorative conversations. When something goes wrong, we will give everyone the opportunity to explain what happened, we will discuss how everyone feels about it and we will agree what everyone needs for things to get better. Learning to engage authentically in restorative conversations is one way that we can bear fruit at St Joseph's and show our repentance.

RGS History Lesson

Last Wednesday, the Local History After School Club had the wonderful opportunity to visit the Royal Grammar School. The Headmaster gave us a fascinating tour, where we were able to explore the old schoolroom and the chained library. The school, founded in 1509, has been educating boys ever since.

One of the most intriguing parts of the visit was seeing the old books chained to the cupboard for protection, a practice from centuries ago to prevent theft. We also had the privilege of viewing rare historical prints and the original school charter, which was given to the school in 1552 by King Edward VI.

We learned that, during Tudor times, the school day began at 6:30 a.m. and often stretched late into the evening. Discipline was enforced with the use of a rod, and writing with the left hand was strictly prohibited.

It was an exciting and inspiring lesson in both the history of education and the history of our town, and a memorable experience for all involved.

St. Joseph's Feast Day

What a joyous day we had celebrating our patron saint St. Joseph. The school was a hive of activity with children partaking in a pilgrimage of prayer and other wonderful creative activities, whilst half the school embarked on a pilgrimage across Guildford. The sun shone, a scenic route and a picnic half way the children ended their pilgrimage with Mass at St. Joseph's Church in Guildford. Thank you to the generosity of staff and parent helpers to make this such a memorable feast day!

The Last Supper

In RE this week, Year 1 have been exploring the story of The Last Supper. First, we acted out the story as a class, thinking about how the disciples would have been feeling at the time. We then drew a picture of a disciple and wrote feelings around them. Finally, we thought of some wondering questions that we had about The Last Supper:

I wonder how Jesus was feeling?

I wonder why bread represents Jesus' body?

I wonder what happened next?

Perfect sense!

This week, Year 2 were lucky enough to have some students from Guildford School of Acting in for some immersive performances. They wrote and directed their own play about a fox who was trying to find his perfect sense. The story was an engaging way to teach children that everybody has different strengths and that we can still all be friends together! We were lucky enough to have some of the set donated to us after the event!

Feet First

This week Year 3 participated in Surrey County Council's Feet First Walking Training Programme. After completing activities in the classroom on The Green Cross Code, recognising safe and unsafe places to cross and the different types of pedestrian crossings, children were led by trained Walking Instructors to carry out on-road practical training. They looked at different road signs and practised using different crossings on the Aldershot Road. The children listened attentively and were fully engaged in the sessions. Everyone was proud to receive a certificate, keyring and pencil at the end of the day.

Awesome Area

In Year 5 this week we've been looking a the area of rectangles in Maths. We've been building on our prior learning and consolidating our understanding of the formula used to work out the area of a rectangle, which is of course length x width! Our diligence and hard work meant that we smashed it!

Football Medals

We travelled to Holy Trinity for a Year 6 football team tournament this week. The children came together very well and worked hard to beat their opponents. They played against 4 different teams and were triumphant in 2 of the matches, securing third place overall and receiving a medal.

Huff and puff!

Today, we did a huff and puff experiment to see if our huff and puff is as strong as the wolf in our book, The Three Little Pigs. We predicted how far we could blow each object and then had a go to see if our predictions were correct. Scientists in the making!

Bhangra Beats!

In Year 6, Class 6B has been exploring Bhangra-style dance in their PE lessons, embracing the vibrant and energetic movements of this traditional Punjabi dance. Over the course of their lessons, they learned five distinct Bhangra motifs, each with its own unique rhythm and style. After mastering these movements, the class worked in small groups to create their own choreographed dances, combining the motifs with various dance techniques they had studied. They showcased their creativity and teamwork, developing their own routines that reflected both the traditional Bhangra style and their personal flair. It’s been a fun and lively experience, allowing the children to appreciate cultural dance while expressing themselves through movement.

Music Master

Congratulations to Mattias in Year 5 for his impressive triumph at the Worplesdon Young Musician of the Year Awards 2025. Mattias competed against many other young talents, displaying skills across various different instrumental and vocal skills, to win the overall top prize! Very well done Mattias!
