Learning from Christ

As we looked ahead to the 8th Sunday in Ordinary Time (Year C), we heard Jesus warn us about the dangers of hypocrisy - “How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the splinter out of your eye,’ when you cannot see the plank in your own eye?”

We have reassured the children that making mistakes is a normal and natural part of life - it is how we learn! We have been thinking about owning our mistakes, instead of blaming others or pointing out their faults.

Children have been celebrating the progress they have made this week, after making a mistake, recognising it and correcting it (usually with a purple pen!) This is a very healthy approach to our lessons and to life.

Sports Hall Success

On Thursday 13th February, Yr 5&6 attended a Sports Hall competition at Guildford Spectrum. After a lot of hard work and training over the year, the children represented St. Joseph's amazingly and came 4th out of 12 very competitive teams - well done!

Life-like!

This week in Year 4 the children have been exploring different sketching techniques observing light and shadows and how to use them to add dimensions to their sketches. Each classroom set up different still life compositions for the children to sketch. Here are a selection of their final pieces.

Year 1 Workout

In PSHE this half term, Year 1 are exploring what keeps us healthy. On Tuesday, we were very lucky to welcome two visitors who are personal trainers. They led each class through a workout session, teaching us which activities are good for our hearts and our muscles, and can help us to stay fit and healthy. The children thoroughly enjoyed the session and many commented on how they felt good afterwards!

Super Scientists

The last 2 weeks of science for Year 3 have involved carrying out investigations. First, we looked as a class at whether it was true that the taller the person, the wider the arm span; then we carried out small group investigations to find if height affected other body parts too. Some groups looked at length of feet, others the length of neck, the length of ears, the height of hands and many more were investigated thoroughly (and we had great fun doing so, using our measuring skills from maths)!

Reception Rainbows

On Monday a double rainbow appeared in the sky. This provoked lots of discussions in Reception about how and why rainbows happen. The children were so excited they all stopped what they were doing to run outside and take a look. Lots of children talked about it being sunny and raining and that is how rainbows appear. Some children noticed that half the sky looked 'dark and gloomy' and the otherside 'sunny' which made it harder to see the rain. The excitement and discussion the rainbow brought was fantastic and a great way to talk about weather and changes we notice around us.

The Silk Road

This week in History, Year 6 continued their study on Ancient Baghdad by researching trade routes and how these evolved. In the lesson, we focussed on The Silk Road, which passed through all the major cities in different countries, returning to Baghdad. Baghdad's position between Africa, Europe and Asia made it ideal for trade. In the golden age of Islam known for new inventions, Jabir ibn Hayyan and Al-Kindi, introduced new scents to Baghdad from other countries through scented oils. Year 6 had a go at identifying different scents and creating their own perfume as well as investigating the methods used for making them. Take a look at some of their great work.

St David's Day

We have been celebrating St David’s day in Nursery. The children have been looking at how the Welsh celebrate this day, where Wales is located on the map, making our own daffodils pictures using various materials and also having a go at our own Welsh traditional dance. We have spotted some daffodils starting to grow outside in the garden. This has lead to discussions of spring and the difference this season brings.

Golden Tickets!

In Year 2 we learn to write for different purposes. This week we have been writing diary entries as if we were Charlie from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The children built up vocabulary earlier in the week and used this to help imagine they were the main character in the story. This had great cross-curricular links as we have also been looking at diaries in History, especially those of Florence Nightingale and Samuel Pepys.

Tolerance with 4R

We enjoyed a beautiful worship by St Rose's Class today - the children explained how the Gospel message this week aligns very well to the British Value of tolerance. With examples from their everyday experience, the children enacted ways that we can show tolerance through our words and actions. We can celebrate and share differences, rather than criticise or contradict others. God made us intentionally different after all. Using the parable of the Good Samaritan, 4R explained, "It is through tolerance that we make peace possible." God bless you St Rose's Class!

Wonderful Witnesses

Congratulations to our host of witnesses this week, who have made a special effort to learn from their own mistakes and show tolerance towards others when they were in need of understanding too. Thank you for responding so enthusiastically to this week's Gospel message!
