Christ Changes Us

We celebrated the Second Sunday in Ordinary Time this week, where we heard about the first recorded miracle of Jesus - changing water to wine at the wedding feast in Cana. It is fascinating to discover that Jesus was actually reluctant to perform the miracle, explaining that he wasn't yet ready to mark the change from his quiet, private life to one of public ministry. However, he does what his mum tells him to!

Change can be unsettling and unwelcome for many of us. It nudges us out of our comfortable existence and into a new reality. However, change is the process through which we learn, grow and achieve more. We have encouraged the children this week to commit to a positive change in this Jubilee Year - an opportunity to change and renew our relationship with God and our identity as Catholics.

C - 2nd Ordinary

Glockenspiel World

This term Year 3 are learning to play the glockenspiels. They have had their first lesson learning the correct posture and the terms associated with the instrument. For the first time we are using Glockenspiel Music World from Charanga, which the children are really enjoying!

In lesson one, we linked the notes B and A we learnt on the recorder to the glockenspiel scale. We found it harder to read the music and find the right notes than on the recorder. As we progress, we will be learning note G and combining them to play several musical pieces.

Adjective Adventure

Year 1 have delved into the story 'Handa's Surprise' this week in English. In the story, Handa puts seven delicious fruits into her basket for her friend Akeyo. To help us with our writing, where we are now teaching the children to include adjectives, we had an opportunity to explore looking at, smelling, feeling and tasting the seven delicious fruits in the story. This captivated the children to think of some creative adjectives to use to describe them: juicy oranges, sour passion fruits, soft mangos, creamy bananas and slimy avocados were amongst the ideas that the children have been using this week.

Floating Ideas...

This week in Nursery we have been looking at floating and sinking. We gave the children the opportunity to experiment and discover what types of objects float and sink in water during a hands-on activity. We discussed what the objects were made of and how heavy they were. The children also made their own boats and tested them on the water. This activity enables the child to promote scientific thinking, such as cause and effect, observations, comparison, experimentation, and evaluation. It also helps in language development and helps to develop hand eye coordination.

War Horse

After studying Michael Morpurgo's War Horse in English and using it as part of our guided reading, Year 6 had an incredible opportunity to see the West End production at Woking Theatre. The show was phenomenal: the imaginative and creative puppetry, beautiful singing and acting were inspiring. Daria loved the way that lighting was creatively used to show the different scene, Sara thought the way they showed the death of Captain Nicholls was powerful and moving and all of the children loved the funny goose that kept trying to escape from the barn! Lots of the children also thought that the pyrotechnics really added to the atmosphere and loved all the loud bangs and flashes. Luam and lots of other children thought that the use of slow motion when the horses were charging was really effective and added to the tension of the scene. An unforgettable experience for all the children and teachers that got to enjoy the show!

Grand Designs

Down in Reception the children have been loving den building. They used the creates to make some turrets for a castle and then used a big piece of tarpaulin to make a roof for their castle. Once the exterior was built, the children enjoyed designing the inside. The children used the green crates to make a bed, however it looked a little uncomfortable! I wonder how we could make it softer? The children even found some tools outside and decided to try and fix the holes in the roof! What brilliant thinking skills we have down in Reception.

Year 4 goes for green!

With our Multiplication Check fast approaching later in the year, Year 4 have been working incredibly hard to secure all their multiplication facts up to 12x12.

These children have successfully turned their heat map on Times Tables Rockstars green, meaning that they can answer any multiplication question in under 4 seconds! What a remarkable achievement!

Life-changing...

In Year 2 we have been continuing our learning on animals in Science. This week we were looking at life cycles of different species, with a specific focus on metamorphosis. We loved finding out about all of the different animals that are born and then turn in to something completely different! This activity helped build our skills in identifying and classifying, as we were able to differentiate between a simple life cycle and a metamorphosis life cycle.

Beautiful Beatitudes

Over the past 2 weeks in RE, we have been focusing on the Beatitudes in Year 5. The children have learnt so much about how Jesus taught these as the foundations for a life of authentic Christian discipleship and the attainment of ultimate happiness. The children created colourful posters with the key messages and Sarun, Olivia and Grace did a fabulous job showing they really understood how Jesus would want us to live our lives. Great work!

2G Change Us

Our thanks to St George's Class for a beautiful class worship this morning. The children explained in detail how changes are a normal part of our daily experience: night becomes day, the temperature peaks and troughs, we grow and develop. With some theatrical magic, the children retold the events of Jesus' first miracle, changing water into wine. They describe how change is an important part of our human experience - we don't stand still: we continue to move and change as we grow closer to each other and to God. Embracing the opportunity for change can have a tremendously positive impact on our lives. Thank you 2G for encouraging us to be open to change, like Jesus.

Witness Awards

Congratulations to our exceptional group of Witness Award winners this week. All of these young people have wowed their class families this week by being ready and willing to embrace the changes of a new school year.
