C - Baptism of the Lord

Excited for Christ

Happy New Year! Our first worship focus for this year is the Baptism of the Lord, which we celebrate at Mass this weekend. We hear how, as John urges the people to repent for their sins and be baptised, the crowds become excited. They wonder if he might be the Christ? John corrects them but encourages them that the Messiah is close at hand.

The start of a new year should be a very exciting time - especially this Jubilee Year! Pope Francis has called us to reignite our relationships with God, each other and creation as Pilgrims of Hope in 2025. We have been exploring with the children what they are excited for this coming year and how they will set high expectations for themselves to make these hopes a reality.

Primary Sources

To start our Roman topic off with a bang as big as Mount Vesuvius, Year 4 were lucky enough to have explored primary sources in the form of Roman pottery which has been found in Surrey, kindly loaned to us by Guildford Museum. The children were enthralled and discussed what they thought the artefacts were, what they were used for and what this could tell us about the Roman period of our local history. They showed excellent historical thinking and loved being exposed to tangible connections to the past.

What do you want to be when you grow up?

This term in Reception we are looking at all different types of jobs and to kick start this we asked the children to come dressed up as what they want to be when they are older. There was a range of occupations from firefighters to gymnasts, we even had some children come as a headteacher - move over Mr Collins! The children were so excited to share their new career with the class and lots of the children role played their new job. Do you have a fun or interesting job you'd like to share with Reception? Another year on...

This week in RE, Year 3 looked back at the year 2024 as the introductory lesson for our Journeys topic. We discussed how some of these times were more joyful and brought more excitement than others. When we took the time to reflect, we remembered a lot and gave thanks for the memories we can now cherish.

Cold but cosy!

Winter Day was a great success in Year One on Tuesday. The children were able to visit a winter wonderland which inspired creative language linked to sight, sound, smell and touch. They then made melting snowman biscuits to sample the sweet taste of cosy winter treats. Lots of stories were told and the children used their imagination to get creative with wintery activities in class. We're looking forward to seeing their beautiful winter writing next week.

When Shall We Three Meet Again?

In English, our Year 6 students have started studying one of Shakespeare's most famous plays - Macbeth. The children have met this with incredible enthusiasm, learning about the beginning scenes upon the heath and the troublesome predictions made by the three witches. They have now met Macbeth and Banquo and have made their own predictions about their fates. Jake wrote that he thinks Macbeth will murder King Duncan in order to fulfill the prophecy while Noah believes that Banquo's sons will kill Macbeth to exact revenge! The children also had great fun getting into character and acting out the first infamous scene of the three witches plotting Macbeth's future. We asked them to think about positioning, expression and intonation and sound effects. Take a look at some of their fantastic work.

The Perfect Present

This week in Year 2, we have started reading a book called 'The Marvellous Fluffy Squishy Itty Bitty'. It's all about a little girl, Eddie, who tries to find the perfect birthday present for her mum. She goes all over town, in and out of all the different shops. As part of this unit, it was important for the children to understand the types of shops that Eddie may visit. Therefore the children went on a walk to the local shops to see the florist, butcher, hairdresser, grocery store etc. We also had a treat of being able to taste some delicious cakes to understand the role of a bakery more!

Icy Explorations!

The children have all settled back really well and seemed full of excitement to be back. This week with the colder weather, we have been learning about Winter. Through various activities and discussions, the children have been identifying which clothes they may need to wear in Winter. In addition to discovering how ice forms. We did a little experiment where the children wanted to put some water outside in the playground, in the fridge and lastly in the freezer to see which place would turn the water into ice. Then we played with the ice and some winter related animals.

Solar System Secrets

In Year 5 this week in Science, we used practical resources to help us unlock the secrets of the Solar System. Specifically, we looked at the movement of the Earth on its axis and used torches to create the light of the Sun so that we could explore the creation of night and day and the 4 seasons. Afterwards, we used our knowledge gained to represent our learning in a labelled, scientific diagram with a written explanation alongside. We achieved some great results!

Setting the bar high!

Congratulations to 5V for an awesome class worship this morning. The children explained how, by setting high expectations for ourselves, we can achieve great things! St Vincent's Class performed an inspiring rendition of "High Hopes" and helped us to see that, throughout the Bible, people had great expectations of what the Messiah would accomplish. Today, we can celebrate that living our lives to the full means following Jesus' aspirational example. Well done children - a beautiful worship.

Exciting Start

We celebrated a host of witnesses for their enthusiasm and energy at the start of this new year.
