C - 3rd Ordinary

Praising Christ

As we prepared for the 3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time, we heard about Jesus’ experience of returning home to Nazareth, after his baptism, to preach in the towns and villages. We hear how he reads with confidence and authority from the scroll of the Prophet Isaiah and, “Everyone praised him.”

We have reflected on how powerful our words can be in both building others up or knocking them down. The children have been challenged this week to find regular opportunities to share praise with their class groups - offering a “shout out” to someone who has positively impacted their day.

Dance by Chance!

In PE this week in Year 5, we’ve been learning how to ‘Dance by Chance’. In pairs, we created 8 dance moves and then put them together using random numbers! It was exhausting but so much fun!

Acting up in Year 3...

Year 3 have concluded their class reader of The Twits by learning about playscripts. They thoroughly enjoyed writing and performing their own play of The Twits where they reflected on some extra tricks that the Twits could play on each other. Learning about stage directions was of particular interest and the children thought carefully about the actions the Twits could be doing and reenacted these with great enthusiasm.

Praise for St Joseph's

A huge note of thanks and congratulations to the whole school community for your remarkable efforts and generosity in raising funds to support the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice last December.

Our Reindeer Run was a tremendous success and the money raised will have a direct impact on the lives of those the hospice cares so beautifully for. The team at PTHC write, "It is thanks to your support that we are able to continue our hospice care in the local community, looking after patients and their families free of charge when they need us most."

Well done Team St Joseph's! - This generous effort speaks directly to our mission in Catholic Social Teaching, to strive together, for the common good, by putting the needs of the most vulnerable in society first.

Getting into shape...

This week in Nursery the children had the opportunity to explore shapes. We focused on the circle, square, triangle and rectangle. Some of the children played a shape hunt game, looking around the nursery for various shapes. We painted using shaped blocks to print with and played some games on our interactive whiteboard. All of these activities made it a fun way to learn about and remember some 2D shapes.

Precious Gems

In Year 2 this week we have been looking at things we like to collect. This has helped us understand why the character of Quentin from our book, The Marvellous Fluffy Squishy Itty Bitty, likes to collect stamps. The children brought in a range of precious items such as cards, shells, gems, cuddly toys, badges, magnets, collectible 50p pieces and so much more! It provided the opportunity for question and answer sessions so the children could work on their presentation skills and it enabled us to all get to know each other more.

The Journey of a Red Blood Cell

In Science, Year 6 have been learning about the circulatory system and how it does the vital job of pumping blood around our bodies. We specifically looked at the role of the red blood cell and how they are designed to efficiently carry oxygen around the body to where it is needed. Hanna in 6F (one of our budding doctors with an ambition of becoming a nephrology consultant) explained to the class about sickle cell anemia and the impact this has on the body - very impressive Dr Shaji! As part of their lesson, children were asked to recreate a model of the circulatory using themselves. The red blood cells were responsible for transporting the gases (oxygen and carbon dioxide) and the organs were responsible for saying whether the red blood cells were oxygenated or deoxygenated. Lots of creative ideas and representations- well done Year 6!

Reception to the rescue...

This week Reception children have been busy learning all about how firefighters help us. They loved making their own videos to show off all their knowledge. Take a look.

Getting into groups

As part of our work on multiplication and division, Year 4 got to grips with dividing into equal groups in a practical way. Children were able to explore how many different equal groups they could divide their portion of cereal into and whether any groups had remainders. We were so impressed with the way they were able to use their multiplicative knowledge to work quickly and efficiently and loved seeing how many different ways they could visually represent their groups.

On a mission!

In RE this week, Year 1 have been learning about the Bible story from the Gospel of Luke where Jesus announces his mission to the people in the temple. Once we had heard the story a couple of times, we retold the story by sequencing pictures. We then reflected on how the people in the temple would have been feeling when they heard Jesus announce his mission and how we can continue to share the Good News ourselves through our everyday actions.

Praise for 1D

Our thanks to St David's Class for a beautifully arranged class worship today. The children sang and signed to the glory of God, explaining that praise means to use your words to celebrate something or someone special. The children modelled how we can build each other up using positive and supportive words. They even explained how, no matter what your size, your words can be used to great effect. It was a very special worship and the children and visitors alike were full of praise for 1D's efforts.

Wonderful Witnesses

Congratulations to this week's Witness Award recipients. These children have all given outstanding contributions to St Joseph's this week, using their positive words and encouragement to make a change in our community. We are really proud of you all and grateful for your thoughtful behaviour. God bless you!
