Close to Christ

As we head towards the end of the Church's year (33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time), Jesus forewarns his followers about the end of time itself. He explains that the earth, the sky and the sun will be shaken - it will feel like a scary time! However, we are reassured, "Know that he is near."

We have used this week to help children become attuned to the feeling of Christ's presence in our lives. A warm smile, a kind word or that nagging feeling inside to pick up the litter I've just walked past can all be understood as expressions of God's presence in our lives, encouraging and challenging us to be responsive to building his kingdom through our words and actions this week.

Spectacular Solar Systems!

This week in Year 5, Science took an exciting turn as we combined our best crafting skills with our growing knowledge of the solar system and created our very own models of the planets. In the process, we learnt about their size, their distance from the sun and what they look like. It was so much fun and so informative too!

Lest We Forget

To mark Remembrance this year, Year 4 learnt all about the significance of the poppy. We found out that the symbol of Remembrance is the poppy because after the Great War ended, the poppy grew in the fields where the soldiers had once fought. We also learnt that the poppy is a good emblem because it both symbolises the bloodshed but, because of its delicate nature, it is a symbol of hope, too. We listened to some war poetry being read and watched interviews with other members of the armed forces to find out what service means to them. The children then responded in various ways, from journaling around 'Flanders Fields' by John McCrae to creating some beautiful artistic pictures.

World Kindness Day

The children loved celebrating World Kindness Day on Wednesday. They made different pictures, stickers and cards for friends, and a huge piece of artwork outside! They even tried to be kind to the planet by litter picking around the school site. Well done!

Elizabeth & Mary

This week in RE, Year 1 have been exploring The Visitation. Through Godly Play, we highlighted the key parts of the story and how Mary and Elizabeth would have been feeling at certain points. The children were then tasked to represent the parts of The Visitation on a storyboard. The suitcase represents Mary packing up her things to visit Elizabeth, the donkey represents her travelling, the smiley face represents Elizabeth's baby jumping for joy inside her womb, and the bucket represents the chores that Mary selflessly helped Elizabeth with. We then explored the words that Elizabeth said to Mary: "Blessed are you" and what these meant. The children were very good at discussing the caring and considerate nature of Mary and decided that, because of this, she had been the chosen one to be the mother of Jesus and was blessed with this opportunity. Some fantastic spiritual reflections Year 1, well done!

Say Cheese

This week we have embraced World Kindness Day. On Wednesday, Year 6 delved into what true kindness is and how little acts of kindness can make a person's day. Throughout the week, children have been adding to a class shout out board and we made fortune tellers to help us think of a small act of kindness we could do each day. Mrs Mulreany made a batch of delicious cheese straws to share with her class as they discovered more about supporting one another. There were lots of appreciative yummy noises and Scarlett the dog even got a treat! The children have enjoyed the shout out boards so much, we plan to continue with them.

Waterproof Wondering

Year 2 have been learning about materials in Science. This week we were using our questioning and observing skills by testing absorbent materials to see if we could make them waterproof by rubbing wax on them. The children concluded that paper becomes waterproof when covered with a layer of wax, but fabrics are not. This is due to fabrics having lots of little holes.

Nursery Remembers

This week we have focused on Remembrance Day. We talked about the significance of the poppy and described this day in an age appropriate way with the help of a short story on CBeebies about a rabbit. We made poppies using red and black paint on paper plates to help with the learning about the world and events that are recognised within the community.

Choosing Respect

Year 3 had a wonderful morning of PSHE on World Kindness Day within Anti-Bullying Week. We looked at relationships and the different relationships that we had with family members, as well as the relationships that we have in school or clubs. We looked at the possible positives and negatives of relationships. Most of what we talked about linked really well to the theme of Anti-Bullying Week: Showing Respect. We have been spotted showing respect around the school (which has been gathered on our SHOUT OUT boards) and discussed what we could do at home too. We also talked about bullying - what it means and who could help us. (On Tuesday, we also enjoyed Odd Socks Day.)

6O's Presence

Our thanks to St Oscar's Class for a stunning class worship this week, focused on God's presence in our lives. We heard how figures from the Bible experienced God's presence in different ways: for Moses it was a burning bush, Elijah heard God in a quiet whisper and the disciples encountered God's spirit in tongues of fire! We heard how modern Christians, like Stormzy, express their experience of God's presence through their writing, music and testimony to the world. Ultimately, the children explained how we can always return to recognise God's presence in the comfort and strength of those we love.

Wonderful Witnesses

Congratulations and thank you to our wonderful witnesses, Reuben & Talia, both of whom have been celebrated this week for using their presence in school to make the community a better, happier place by their example.
