Understanding Christ

Our Gospel focus this week was the 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time (Year B). After Peter's assertion last week that Jesus was the Messiah, Jesus tries to deepen their understanding further by forewarning them of his death and resurrection but, "They did not understand." To make matters worse, the disciples were too afraid to ask.

We have explained to the children this week that feelings of confusion and misunderstanding are very normal. Adults have everyday encounters with these feelings and we have to problem solve our way around them. Teachers have helped children this week think about what positive steps they can take in class if they feel confused: check for examples, ask a friend, seek some adult help. Why not ask your child if they used these strategies this week?

6B's Growth Mindset

Our thanks to St Bernadette's Class for a superb class worship on growth mindset this week. The children helped us to recognise and understand the "power of yet". I might not be able to do something yet, I might not be the best yet, I might not feel confident yet. They explained how Moses too experienced the same sense of self-doubt during his mission to free the Israelites from slavery in Egypt.

However, when we recognise that our life's journey is not about being perfect, it is about making progress, we are able to have the resilience to learn from our mistakes, have another go and grow in faith.

Thank you 6B for launching the year with such a positive and reassuring message!

Reception at the Ready!

It was Reception's first full week and they really have been busy! The children have loved exploring the outside area and developing their gross motor skills by climbing and jumping! The cars have been a hit, and the children are very imaginative with their ramps already!

We have learnt the sounds s and a! This has inspired the children to make some a... a.... alligator art.

Finally in Maths we have been sorting objects. The children were able to sort the pasta into lots of different groups such as long and short, tube and non-tube, curly and straight.

We cannot wait for the year ahead!

Active Play

Having got into the swing of active play, some of our Year 2 popstars were eager to celebrate their talents with the world. After forming a band, rehearsing the choreography and playing to a live audience, we thought they deserved their picture on our wall of fame.

Stone Age Cave Paintings

Going back in time, Year 3 experienced what it might have been like to discover cave paintings. The lights were off, the windows covered and the children entered a classroom cave complete with a torchlight campfire. Using a torch, (the ancient kind would have involved wood and fire!), the children explored the walls to find hidden cave art. Using what they learnt they then started to prepare their piece of cave wall art, by sanding a piece of card. Next week, they will make their own paints and decorate in the ways Stone Age artists would have drawn their hunting scenes and told stories.

Jalsa Salana

I was blessed back in July to be able to attend the annual Muslim convention - Jalsa Salana - held locally near Farnham. Our very good friends from the Ahmadiyya Muslim Association UK welcomed tens of thousands of visitors from around the world to learn more about their beliefs, culture and outreach work.

We heard from his Holiness Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad (the worldwide leader of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community) and reflected on the mantra of the association, "Love for all, hatred for none."

I enjoyed the hospitality and wisdom of many of the guides at Jalsa Salana, who shared their history and faith (and food!) with such generosity. A truly enriching experience!

Our Planet

In our last Year 6 Geography lesson we learned about the location of the tectonic plates and the physical features of planet Earth. We discovered that these are responsible for providing an ever-changing world full of reefs, mountains, forests, lakes and rivers - but they can be deadly. Using our atlasas, this week, we located fault lines, marking volcanoes and earthquakes and thinking about the different types of tectonic movements. We also discussed why people might choose to live in a danger zone where the tectonic plates meet. Next lesson, we will focus on human features, continuing to use the atlases to compare population sizes and the importance of natural resources to different countries.

Five and a bit...

In Maths, Year 1 have been recapping numbers to 10, using the 'five and a bit' structure. We are becoming more fluent in recalling that the numbers 6-10 are made up of five and a bit more, and knowing what that bit is. We have been using tens frames to represent this structure, along with our fingers.

Nursery News

The children continue to settle very happily in Nursery, learning the routines, faces and expectations that will help them to thrive.

History Happiness!

In History this week, Year 5 created a human timeline of our learning journey so far, before beginning our new Anglo-Saxons topic!

We then investigated the different ‘push’ and ‘pull’ factors that contributed to the Saxons' choice to invade Britain.

Building Relationships

In RE, Year 2 are learning about the story of Noah's Ark from the Old Testament. We talked about how we can be either helpful or hurtful, and when we are hurtful we put our relationship with God at risk. The children role played some situations where they are hurtful, then 'rewound' them to show what they could have actually done instead.

Launching into Year 4

This week in Science, Year 4 have been focusing on predicting. We used our prior knowledge to make predictions and had fun creating our own catapults to test out our predictions. We found out that we could amend or change our predictions based on new knowledge we acquired. We also realised that marshmallows are not the optimal construction material!
