Seeing Christ

Looking ahead to the 30th Sunday in Ordinary Time, we hear the account of blind Bartimaeus. He calls out to Jesus as he passes by, "Master, let me see again!" Jesus miraculously cures Bartimaeus but he attributes the cure to Bartimaeus' own faith, "See - your faith has made you well!"

We have been speaking to the children this week about the importance of seeing the goodness all around us. Taking the time to notice and celebrate the blessings in our lives is a very powerful way of lifting our mood, improving our mental health and growing in relationship with God.

The whole school community has been encouraged this week to look out for moments when God's Kingdom is being built and take the time to say what they have seen in their worship times together.

B - 30th Ordinary

Who Dunnit?

In English this week, Year 5 enjoyed a lively debate about who was responsible for the deaths of Bess and the Highwayman. As we turned our classrooms into courtrooms, our jury reached their verdict after some compelling evidence from both sides, and some powerful closing remarks. Tim was found guilty!

Super Soup!

This week in Year 2 we have been having a DT focus. Children learn about designing a purposeful product, using a range of tools to perform practical tasks and evaluate a final product. The children got straight to work with their vegetable soup! In the early part of the week, we identified different vegetables, then we learned how to chop and grate. We tasted and compared different soups and finally we made our own delicious vegetable soup!

Phonics Lessons

As we approach the end of half term the children are loving showing off their phonics skills. The children have now learned lots of sounds and are beginning to even write some words! They enjoyed using the letters to press into playdough to write and drawing around stencils.

Lots of the children also love being 'the teacher' and using the sound cards to recall the sounds quickly!

The British Smiles

To round off our Geography Depth Study on the British Isles, Year 4 had a wonderful afternoon putting all their learning from the topic into practise! Using atlases and some tissue paper, they created these wonderful models of the British Isles. They located and reimagined borders, lakes rivers, mountains and the capital cities of each country. It was wonderful to see them using the atlases with a newfound sense of confidence and the children worked hard in their teams to produce some amazing results.

Find the Parents...

In Year 6 Science, we dove into the world of inherited characteristics where everyone became detectives in the case of Mr. Men and Little Miss families. We used our knowledge of inherited characteristics to match up the parents to their offspring and understand how genes can be passed down. We had to work out which parents might have passed on their features like Mr Nosey's large nose or Little Miss Sporty's long legs. We also thought about what characteristics the children could have acquired from their parents such as Mr Greedy's love of food or Mr Small's love of wearing hats! We also reflected on what we've inherited from our own parents, like eye colour or hair type, and thought about the skills and habits we've acquired over time, such as learning to play an instrument or picking up a new hobby. It was a fun way to see how we're shaped by both genetics and experience!

Run, run as fast as you can!

In English this week, Year 1 have been exploring the story The Gingerbread Man. We started the week by learning the story and retelling it using story maps. We were very impressed with the children's enthusiasm for the story. One child even went home and retold it using puppets!

Next, we will be using The Gingerbread Man as a basis to construct some simple sentences using colourful semantics - who, what doing, where.

Thankful Pumpkins

This week in Nursery, we have listened to a story about ‘The thankful Leper’, who thanked God for making him feel better. From this, the children suggested lots of different things they were thankful for. We wrote them on our thankful pumpkin. At the end of the week we will placed our thankful pumpkin in our small vegetable patch, to enable the children to watch it decay first hand and we can then explain how the decaying pumpkin will add more goodness to the soil. We were lucky enough this year to have 3 homegrown pumpkins, grown in our own vegetable patch from doing the same experiment last year.

The children have explored what is inside a pumpkin by using spoons and tweezers to investigate the seeds and the inside flesh of a pumpkin.

Strike a pose...

Year 3 had a wonderful day and a half studying the work of Alberto Giacometti. He was a painter, drawer and sculptor and is most famous for his tall, thin figures made of bronze. Our topic started with the children drawing some of Giacometti’s figures and thinking about the shape and size of the human form. All the children had fun, striking poses as they explored making strong action shapes with their bodies. Next, using foil, the children explored how to make a foil sculpture by cutting, folding, bending and shaping. It was frustrating when the foil ripped so easily but the classes persevered. Although a 3D figure was made, it lacked any stability to stand up so a skeleton was required. After planning their own action figure sculpture, the children used pipe cleaners for the skeleton structure before wrapping the framework in the foil. Lengths of foil were required to add strength and all the children managed to successfully create a 3D figure. They wrapped the project up with a gallery show, just like real artists.

Seeing 6F

Our thanks to St Francis Class for a stunning class worship this morning. The children explained to us how we can see the story of God's salvation through the whole Bible, from the Genesis story of creation through to this week's Gospel account of blind Bartimaeus. They sang and danced to the poignant praise and worship song, "Open the eyes of my heart, Lord" as they led the whole school in worship. A fantastic job 6F!

Congratulations to this week's outstanding group of Witness Award winners. All these children have been seen by school staff responding beautifully and selflessly to our school mission. What a joy to see them celebrated for their shining example. Well done and God bless you children!
