Belonging to Christ

We considered the upcoming weekend's Gospel in our worship this week - 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time (Year B). Once again, the poor disciples are in for a hard time, as they try to do the right thing but come to recognise that Jesus requires the opposite response...

They come across a man performing miracles in Jesus' name but, because he isn't one of their group, they tell him to stop. Jesus reprimands the disciples, "You must not stop him!" He explains that anyone performing miracles in his name is surely for them, not against them.

We've used this week's Gospel to focus on the idea of belonging. What does it mean to belong to our class community, our school family, wider society? Ask your child what they've learnt about belonging to St Joseph's this week.

Reception Rhythm

This week some children were having a fantastic time with the musical instruments outside! Singing and using instruments in time with the music - very impressive. Singing number songs is such a good and easy way to support your children at home with number sense. Why not sing one this week?

Tag Rugby

This half term in PE, 6F are developing their skills and teamwork in tag rugby. In lessons, we are developing attacking principles, considering when to run, pass and create space to help our team. We are learning how to apply a range of rules and tactics and evaluate the effectiveness of these. Another important aspect of our PE sessions is the need to work in collaboration, playing by the rules honestly and fairly to ensure the game runs smoothly. Take a look at us in action!

Get with the program

This week, children have enjoyed their first Computing lessons in Year 1! We used the Beebots to help us learn about programming. We gave the Beebots commands by programming them to move where we wanted them to go. Later on in the day, we explored debugging to ensure our programming was accurate and precise. The children loved this unit and some of their technical knowledge was very impressive!

Year 3 Rocks!

After retrieving the names of rocks and their properties from the previous lesson, the children were posed the question 'Which rock is the hardest?' Ideas included throwing them on the playground to see if they break and banging them against each other. As a class we decided these probably weren't safe ideas to carry out in a school, so we chose to do a scratch test in the classroom. In groups, the children scratched each rock with their fingernail, a coin and a paperclip to see they left a mark and recorded their results in a table. Following the investigation, the children were able to conclude which were the hardest rocks and began to give reasons. Next week we will investigate a different property - permeability.

Getting to grips with Nursery...

This week we have been continuing to build up our relationships with the children and getting to know them. In addition, we have been taking part in activities to develop their pincer grip and build up the muscles in their hands.

Year 4 in their place

Year 4 have begun their Maths units with renewed energy after the long Summer break, reminding themselves of the importance of place value. During this practical lesson, children were representing 3 or 4 digit numbers in different ways and asking their group to round that number to the nearest 10. This was retrieval of the skills we learned previously in Year 3, but we will continue to build our knowledge by rounding to 100 and 1000 later in the unit. Can any of your children from Year 3 upwards tell you the sentence we use to help us in rounding and explain its importance?

Despite this unit coming to an end next week, we will continue to use the skills we have acquired when we begin our addition and subtraction unit, which is coming up next.

Reading & Writing

This week in Year 2 we have come to the end of our unit on Little Red Reading Hood. The children have learned all sorts of vocabulary to describe woods, libraries, wolves, librarians and much more! We spent some time mixing up traditional fairy tales to show how we can use our imagination in any way we like when we are writing! We ended the week by writing the beginnings of our own stories about Little Red Reading Hood, supported by the sentences we had been building up over the past three weeks. The children are being taught to check their work as they go and make relevant edits.

Strictly Come Dancing

With Strictly back on the television every Saturday night there's buzz around dancing and everyone's talking about it! Luckily for Year 5 they get to actually do it. The breadth of our PE curriculum is wonderful and here we can see 5V exploring some expressive dance moves!

Belonging to 5M

Our thanks to 5M for leading the whole community in worship this morning, reflecting on the importance of a warm welcome if we are to feel like we belong to the community. Even Mary, Joseph and Jesus relied on the generous welcome of the inn keeper during their time in Bethlehem.

St Martha's Class encouraged us to heed some important messages: welcoming is everyone's job, welcoming needs to happen every day for everyone, the community works better when we all feel like we belong. Thank you 5M for such an inspiring worship! You made us feel very welcome indeed.
