C - 2nd Lent

Listen to Christ

We have been looking ahead to the Second Sunday of Lent (Year C) and the famous account of the transfiguration. In this week's Gospel, we hear how Jesus takes his closest disciples up a mountain to pray and, in their presence, his being is transformed and the voice of God is heard, "This is my son, listen to him."

We have explored this week the beautiful sounds that make our lives meaningful and the many different ways that we can tune in to hear God's voice in our busy world too. I shared with children on Monday the practice of Lectio Divina (divine reading) - a form of meditative prayer where a short section of scripture is read multiple times in order to discern the message that God is calling us to hear.

A town in time...

Year 2 enjoyed class trips to Guildford on the bus this week to find out all about its past. We went on a scavenger hunt of the town to find out about significant places and people in our own locality and enjoyed spending time in the castle grounds and by the river finding out about why these are important aspects of the history of Guildford.

A little birdie in Year 3

In Music Year 3 have been learning the song, "Three Little Birds" by Bob Marley. This week we used the notes C and D on the glockenspiel to copy a simple pattern. After this, we began composing our own music using 4 beats to a bar. After clapping the rhythm to a friend, we confidently played it on a glockenspiel. We were very proud of our compositions!

Up and away!

The children in Art Club have been working on designing and making their own kite over the last two weeks. It is clear to see we have some 'high flyers' in our midst!

Hearing with your heart

In Witness Worship this week, Miss Hilborn took the lead in introducing us to a remarkable individual: Marlee Matlin. An award-winning actress and activist.

Marlee lost her hearing at 18 months old. However, Marlee’s parents found a synagogue that offered services with sign language and there, in God’s house, she felt she really belonged.

At the age of 7, after years of listening for God and watching for signs of where she fit into the world, she discovered He had given her a gift. She got up on stage at a children’s camp and signed to a song. A voice within told her, “This is it. This is where you belong!”

Year 5 Improvise

In music this week, the children were challenged to change one of the verses of the Adele song, ‘Make you feel my love’ into their own version. Most children decided to sing it in a different style, with a different tempo - it was lovely to see. Two children who really stood out were Alice and Freya: they took on a completely different approach. They felt inspired by Miss Hilborn’s assembly and decided to perform the verse in sign language!

Listening to 1W

St William's Class led us in a beautiful worship this morning, reminding us of the powerful story of Samuel and Eli - you never know the day or the hour when God will call upon you. 1W helped us to see that it's not just our ears we need to hear with: we listen to God with our heart, our mind and our soul too.

Thanks for an amazing worship 1W! We loved listening to you!

Hockey Festival

On Monday 7th March, the St Joseph's Hockey Team played exceptionally well at a Hockey Festival at Holy Trinity. Their defending skills were relentess and they must be commended for their effort and energy! It was a wonderful opportunity to be able to get together with another school and enjoy playing hockey.

WELL DONE Hockey Team!

Thank you to Holy Trinity for hosting us and a special thank you to Mrs Peedell and Mrs Currie for their coaching expertise and time dedicated to training the Hockey Team each week.

Listening Champions

Congratulations to our impressive array of Witness Award winners this week! All of these children have demonstrated a strong commitment to making our school a better place by listening carefully to other members of our community. God bless you all!
