C - 3rd Ordinary

Praising Christ

We are celebrating the 3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year C, and the news that when Jesus taught in the synagogue, "Everyone praised him". The worshipers were impressed with the confidence and authority with which he spoke.

We all enjoy the feeling of being praised and rewarded for meeting (or even exceeding) someone's expectations. We have been focusing this week on how our words can build up and encourage those around us to continually strive to improve our school.

It's not just the adults praising the children at St Joseph's, many of our young people have also been applauding and rewarding the staff with praise for their excellent work too!

Praising you!

Wow St Joseph's! We have received the most amazing praise and gratitude from Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice Care, whose Reindeer Run our families supported so generously before the Christmas break. The total is now in and we are very proud (and overwhelmed) to announce that the children of St Joseph's raised over £4,000 for this important local charity. Thank you, well done and God bless you all!

Precision Teaching

This week in maths, Year 6 have been working on angles and in particular honing their measurement skills using protractors and rulers. Here are some beautifully neat and accurate examples from Julianna and Emmie.

Twits & Tricks in Year 3!

In Year 3 we are just coming to the end of our unit on The Twits by Roald Dahl. The children have explored how dialogue is set out in a story and written their own tricks the characters could play on each other. We had some amusing and creative ideas involving glue, paint, water, scorpions, balloons, collapsing chairs and ants as pepper on the fish and chips! After identifying the features of a play script, the children then re-wrote their trick as a playscript and acted some of them out in groups. The children all enjoyed creating their own tricks and produced some excellent writing. Well done Year 3 authors!

Witness Worship - Praise

Forgotten Praise

In Witness Worship this week, Miss Young shared with us the sad and beautiful story of Edith Cavell; a British nurse who made it her duty to serve any soldier harmed in war, regardless of their affiliations or beliefs. Edith was executed for treason because of her willingness to help anyone in need. She died without receiving any praise or recognition for her heroic work.

Today, Edith has a permanent memorial in the heart of London to remember her incredible life and service to humanity. Awards are now named after her and, although she did not receive the praise she deserved in her own lifetime, many are now proud to be praised in her name.

High Praise!

It has been an exciting week for Ata - he was awarded 2nd place in an international Islamic academic competition, learning to recite the Qur'an. His achievement is not only a tremendous blessing on his family but beautiful example of his commitment to his faith. Well done Ata - you are an inspiration to us all!

Baptism Art

In RE this week, Year 2 explored different artistic representations of Jesus' baptism in the River Jordan. We then created our own pieces of artwork to show this. Here are just a few wonderful examples of the children's own interpretations.

All ears in Year 4

Children have been captivated by their new science topic in Year 4 - sound. Over the last couple of weeks they have investigate the noisiest areas of the school (using their decibel iPad app) and explored how sound travels more efficiently through solids than gases. You simply won't believe the quality of sound you can achieve with a wire coat-hanger and a couple of pieces of string!

Praise for Will!

Congratulations to this week's award winner - Will! We are showering praise on him for always being ready and willing to say a kind word and be an encouraging soul to anyone around him. What wonderful qualities! Keep up the great effort Will!
