Happy in Christ

Our worship theme this week has focused on the idea of facing adversity. Jesus tells the crowd in this week's Gospel, "Happy those who weep" (6th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year C). On the surface it's an oxymoron! However, on closer inspection, we uncover that it is through difficult, sad and vulnerable life experiences that we grow stronger in relationship with each other and with God.

Learning to recognise the challenges in our lives as opportunities to reimagine what "life to the full" looks like is a very powerful way of turning our weeping into joy. Understanding the inspiring stories of people from all walks of life who have overcome adversity has been a wonderful opportunity this week.

Lost Toys in Year 1

For PE this week, St David's class heard a story about a little girl called Aisha losing her toy and all of her other toys coming to life to help look for it.

Take a look at the video attached. I wonder if can you spot the following:

  • A wooden octopus

  • A stretchy toy

  • A bouncing ball

  • A wind up robot

  • A toy car

  • An aeroplane

Delivery!

All the children loved writing a letter to send home to help them understand the job of a postal worker. The children learned about how the postal worker will use many keys to open the post box and collect the letters. They will then go to the sorting office and the workers will look at the postcode to help them deliver their letters. Some of the letters even arrived the next day!

The children have also been busy making their house number tiles to help the postal worker find their house. We can't wait for the clay to dry so the children can paint them!

Introducing Baby Jude

Such special news from Mrs Dollner, after only just finishing for maternity leave last Friday!

Baby Jude Derek Louis Dollner - born at 12:25pm on Monday and weighing exactly 9lb.

What a beautiful baby boy - congratulation Dollners! All our love and prayers for this next step on your family's journey.

Getting Ready in Year 3

In our new RE topic, Year 3 have been thinking about how the Church community prepares for Mass. We invited Mr Collins to come and speak with us about his role as Extraordinary Minister. He answered the children's questions in great detail and both the children and adults were fascinated to learn about the preparation involved as well as a few other interesting facts!

The Catholic Parish of Guildford warmly invites us all to attend Mass and you can find out more about the weekly Mass times here:

Witness Worship 7th Feb 2022

Turning tears into talents

Our thanks to Mrs Jopson for this week's Witness Worship. It was an inspiring opportunity to hear about the remarkable life and work of a world-famous musician: Ludwig van Beethoven. His music has affected the lives of so many people across the generations, not lest of all Mrs Jopson and Ming (Year 6) - both of whom have a passion for his solo piano piece, "Fur Elise".

However, it is lesser known that Beethoven's journey was a challenging and upsetting one, losing his hearing in his twenties. Nevertheless, this didn't prevent him from living his dream and living his life to the full. He is an inspiring example what it means to face adversity and turn tears into laughter.

Cross country champs!

Massive congratulations to all our Year 3 & 4 cross country competitors this week, who bravely battled it out on Rydes Hill Common.

A special well done to Evie and Aidan who came second and third (respectively) in their races. Their achievement is a remarkable feat given the hundreds of children who took part. It is also a testament to the weeks of commitment and dedication they have given to the Cross Country Club, generously led by Mrs Sewell and Mrs Yarrow with the support of Mrs Peedell.

Well done to all involved in this race!

Turmoil in Year 6!

Over the last few weeks in Year 6 we have been studying the story of Macbeth and as we have reached the end of this half term we've come to a climax, with Macbeth deliberating over whether to kill King Duncan. We have seen his character change from the loyal, valiant and noble warrior we saw at the beginning to the power-hungry, greedy man who wants only one thing - to be king himself. The transformation is not quite complete, however, and as he contemplates carrying out the fateful deed, his mind plays tricks on him. The awesomely talented Year 6 children wrote compelling and insightful diary entries, giving us a glimpse into Macbeth's turmoil...To kill or not to kill?

Celebrating Mental Health

There have been so many activities and opportunities to celebrate children's mental health this week. Here's a brilliant example from year 3...

We learnt a few Makaton signs in honour of Children's Mental Health week, with the promise of a recording a song at the end of the week. 3G embraced the challenge, and more than half of the class asked for solos/small group parts(!), so, in the true spirit of the song, they all got them!

Reception to the rescue!

Reception were very excited about the firefighters coming to visit on Tuesday. We have been learning all about fire safety and what to do if we see a fire. All the children know the number 999 and when to call it. RH went out first and got to see the truck and Firefighter Alex in his uniform. They loved seeing inside the truck and even had a go at using the big hose. Sadly when RT went out to see them, they had to rush off to a real life emergency. We saw them get ready very quickly and heard the sirens as they drove away. Don’t worry they will be back after half term for RT and RK!

Breaking the mould!

Congratulations to this week's Witness Award Winner. All three of these fabulous young people have demonstrated a real commitment to overcoming challenges in our community and make a positive difference. What a great attitude to celebrate!

Well done to:

  • Thomas

  • Anasztazia

  • Alyssa
