The title 'National Artist' is the highest recognition given in the Philippines. To be awarded, the individual must be Filipino at the time of nomination and awarding, only be nominated under the category of either Architecture and Allies Arts, Dance, Design, Film and Broadcast Arts, Literature, Music, Theater, and Visual Arts. Prior to awarding, the awardee must contribute many works of art, pioneer new forms of art under their category of nomination, contribute a sense of nationhood, have a substantial amount of works, continously present excellence in their craft, enrich artistic expression or style, and contribute an impact to succeeding generations.
National Living Treasure
A National Living Treasure is a prestigious recognition given to individuals, particularly of indigenous backgrounds, who are engaged in distinctive traditional Filipino skills and crafts, mastered, preserved, and passed on to keep these traditions alive for more than 50 years. These qualifications validate them as true Filipinos exhibiting excellence in their traditional art forms, and inspiring generations to continue cultivating local crafts.
They are also known as awardees of the Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan (GAMABA) award, administered by the National Commission for Culture and Arts (NCCA) as recognition for their significant contribution in garnering art appreciation and instilling a sense of pride among Filipinos through promotion of their cultural heritage.

Indigenous people in the Philippines face significant social injustices rooted in historical marginalization, land deprivation, and lack of political representation. Despite legal protections, many communities continue to suffer from displacement due to development projects, mining, and armed conflict, limiting their access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities. These struggles contribute to the endangerment of Philippine culture as integral parts of the nation’s identity are threatened by social pressures, neglect, and gradual loss of ancestral identity.
Preserving cultural traditions and ancient art is crucial for future generations and cultivating national identity in the efforts of promoting our own local color and developing the landscape of Philippine art in such a way that it progresses from its own historical and conventional roots.
As an individual, through exploring the different national museums such as the national museum of anthropology in order for one to appreciate and bring awareness to the different cultures and forms of art.
Considering the exposure of modernism in the country, these communities must be integrated more into the cultural and artistic landscape as the future ancestors of traditional arts; the public must gain more awareness and understanding of their craft through social promotion
