The school day starts with a morning task, this may be independent reading, a times table or maths challenge, or a handwriting exercise. We come together to register and have collective worship.
Morning lessons include English and Maths. Alongside this they are taught their foundations subjects, making links across topics where possible. Music, French and some PE lessons are taught by specialist teachers.
The children are encouraged to bring in a snack from home for break time.
Year 3's have their lunch in the hall and playtime in the green playground. Activities, inc football are available on a rotation throughout the week.
The children continue to have an afternoon break at the beginning of the Autumn term. This is then phased out by half term.
The school day often ends with story time, where we share a class reader and our end of the day prayer and reflection. Children are dismissed at 15:10 through the Y1 classrooms.
Reading
The children bring home a reading book from a reading stage. Your child's book should be one they can read with confidence and fluency. We would like the children to read at least 5 times a week. The children need to record this reading in their record book. Please continue to listen to your child read and sign their reading record. They are able to change their reading books on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday, their reading record will be checked by an adult before the change their book. Each Tuesday their reading record will be checked by the class teacher. Throughout the week all children will be heard read by an adult. It is important that their reading book is in school everyday.
Homework
Literacy and Numeracy homework will be sent home on a Thursday. Both pieces of homework are due the following Wednesday.
The children all have access to google classroom. Sometimes homework challenges will be set on there.
Spellings
The spelling test takes place on Thursday. The list of spellings is given out at the beginning of each half term. In their spelling test the word is read aloud three times, once in a sentence. The teachers collect the children's scores at the end of each test.
Times tables
The times tables test takes place on Tuesday. The children will need to achieve 12/12 for 3 tests before moving on to the next one. Our order of testing is based on guidance from the NCETM (National Centre of Excellence for Teaching Mathematics). The order is as follows:-
10x, 5x, 2x, 4x, 8x, 3x, 6x, 9x, 7x, 11x, 12x
In Year 3, we want to the children become confident and passionate readers who are curious about different books and authors.
Each classroom has a welcoming book corner where the children can delve into a good book.
The children have a library session each week where they can browse different authors and borrow books.
