Above are some of the books we use in Year 3 to inspire our writing during the summer term.
During the Summer term for Writing, the children will:
Write a newspaper report
Write a biography
Write a diary entry
Write a traditional tale with a twist
Within writing, the children will look at a range of 'good' examples of texts. They will also plan, write and edit their own pieces of writing.
We use the yellow writing checklist in Year 3 to assess what they have used in their writing.
Guided reading:
Both St Monica and St Augustine's have a weekly guided session.
The children are taught reading skills through 'reciprocal reading'
The key skills the children learn to do are: predicting, asking and answering questions, summarising the main points from a text and clarifying new vocabulary.
In the summer term, Year 3s maths topics are Fractions, Time, 2D and 3D shapes, and Capacity and Volume.
In our fractions topic, Year 3 will recap their Year 2 knowledge which includes recgonising and finding halves and quarters. We will progress to recognising any unit fraction and non-unit fraction. Children will first find fractions of shape and they will apply these skills to fractions of number. We will also learn about adding and subtracting fractions which share the same denominator.
Our second maths this term is Time. Here, children will become confident in being able to read any time on an analogue and digital clock. They will use vocabulary such as 'to', 'past', 'a.m' and 'p.m'. Children will be able to add lengths of time to work out the start and end point of an event.
Year 3 will then move on to learning about 2D and 3D shapes. Here, children will confidently use vocabulary including 'horizontally', 'vertically', 'parallel' and 'perpendicular'. Children will identify angles in shapes and be able to recgonise a range of 2D and 3D shapes.
Year 3's last maths topic will be 'Mass and Capacity'. This includes understanding the difference between mass and capacity and how we measure liquids using millilitres and litres. Children will apply their addition and subtraction skills to solve problems with mixing and adding amounts of capacity together.
Finally, children will end the year with a consolidation and celebration of all of our Year 3 learning in maths.
Energy
Children begin this topic by exploring the energy of wind and fire as Christians believe that the gift of the Holy Spirit within them gives them energy and the power to live like Jesus. They learn about how the disciples were filled with the gifts of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost and that they went out courageously to spread the message and Gospel of Jesus to the whole world.
Judaism
Children learn about important rituals and festivals that take place in both the synagogue and home of Jewish people. They discover that the synagogue is not just a place of worship but also where the Jewish community gathers for education and social events.
Choices
Children learn the importance of examing their conscience when making choices. We discuss good and bad choices and what the consequences are for ourselves and others. They learn that the sacrament of Reconciliation is a celebration of God's love and mercy; it is about the forgiveness of sin and being reconciled with God and one another.
Special Places
In the last religious topic in Year 3 children discuss and learn about the many different special places in a Christian community. We learn about the different places where people gather for prayer and worship. Places are holy because of their association with Jesus or holy people e.g. places of pilgrimage.
