In Year 3 all children will be given a staged reading book to bring home. We encourage the children to continue to read out loud at home. Each child is listened to read out loud at least once a week at school.
Some children will continue with Read Write Inc in Year 3.
All children are encouraged to use the library to borrow books to read themselves alongside their staged reading book.
Below is a useful website for suggested reads in year 3:
We have a weekly guided reading session that focuses on reciprocal reading. The children each take on one of 4 roles in the session:
Predictor
Summeriser
Clarifier
Questioner
During this weekly session we use a range of engaging non fiction and fiction texts.
In the Autumn term we read a range of fiction and non fiction books during our literacy lessons to inspire the children's writing.
During the first Autumn half term, the children will read and write:
'The Truth About my Unbelievable Summer' - Summer holiday recount
'The Tear Thief' - A persuasive letter
'The Pied Piper' - A traditional narrative
During the second Autumn half term, the children will read and write:
'The First Drawing' - A historical narrative
'Early Britain' - A non-chronological report
We assess the children's writing using the 'writing checklist' after each piece they complete.
In the Autumn term we recap the grammar from year 2:
Capital letters and full stops
Question marks and exclamation marks
Apostrophes for missing letters
Adverbs

We complete a daily handwriting task when the children first arrive in the morning. We use continuous cursive handwriting. The daily handwriting aims to improve letter joins as well as legibility.
In our Math's lessons we follow The White Rose Scheme for learning. Please click to find the whole school progression map.
Place Value
We begin the Autumn term by exploring the place value of numbers to a thousand. We use Base 10 equipment and place value grids to reinforce our understanding.
Addition and subtraction
We aim to be adding and subtracting 3 digit and 2 digit numbers by half term. The children will become more confident at using the column method for addition and subtraction whilst using images, Base 10, place value counters and grids to aid their learning and encourage verbal explanations of their working out.
Times Tables
The times tables test takes place on Tuesday. The children will need to achieve 12/12 for 3 tests before moving on to the next one. Our order of testing is based on guidance from the NCETM (National Centre of Excellence for Teaching Mathematics). The order is as follows:-
10x, 5x, 2x, 4x, 8x, 3x, 6x, 9x, 7x, 11x, 12x
Homes
In our first RE topic in Year 3 children explore how God is present in every home. We learn that this is expressed in the love that binds the family together within the home through the good times and bad times. By the end of this topic children will know and understand the joys and sorrows of being a family at home and God's vision for every family.
Promises
In our promises topic we explore the promises that we make during the sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation. Children will learn that these promises are the call to a new way of life and that people are welcomed and initiated into the Christian Church. Children will know and understand that belonging to a group involves promises and rules.
Islam
We spend one week learning about Islam in Year 3. Children learn that Muslims are the followers of Islam and that they believe in one God, Allah. We learn about the two groups of Muslims - Shi'ah and Sunni.
Visitors (Advent)
In this topic the children learn about the coming of God, in the person of Jesus and how important it is to Christians. We explore the idea that Christians believe that in the future this same God will come again in glory. By the end of this topic children will know and understand the demands and joys of visitors.
