Major Focus – Physics and Chemistry
Description
This course is designed for students who enjoy Science and have demonstrated strong ability in the subject. It extends learning beyond the standard Year 9 course, with a strong emphasis on Physics, Chemistry, and Environmental Science. Students investigate real-world applications such as rocket motion, black holes, chemical reactions, energy systems, and climate change. Through practicals, research, and creative thinking, students develop both scientific knowledge and communication skills. It is recommended that students are achieving highly in both Year 8 Science and Mathematics, and this may be used to determine suitability for entry into the subject.
Units in this elective include:
Astrophysics – Space, gravity, black holes and rocket design
Scientific Research Project – Plant growth in space-like conditions
Chemistry – Atoms, reactions and the Mole
Environmental Science – Climate change, pollution and renewable energy
