Problem statements

Domain: Flow measurement

To develop a non-contact in-line flow sensor unit which will be able to measure flow rate ranging from 0-10 lpm(liters per minute) in a pipe of diameter 15mm(Approx.). If necessary the diameter at the point of measurement can be lowered.

Synopsis

Flow measurement is required in many industries. There are a number of standard products available in this sector for Flow measurement application such as Ultrasonic sensors, Rotary encoders, Mass flow sensors, Infrared sensors etc. The problem statement that we are addressing is related to dairy industry; for measuring the quantity milk while milking using vacuum based bucket milking machines. Most of the above sensors have issues while being used for the proposed application. The goal of this challenge is to obtain an appropriate and affordable solution for this problem statement.

Notes

• Fluid Flow is discontinuous with bubbles.
• Fluid is partially opaque.
• The flow has varying velocity because of many factors.
• Rotary flow meters are not ideal for the application, because they often tend to get disturbed by varying flow and trapped bubbles.
• Since vacuum suction is used in the bucket milking machines negative pressure is coming inside the pipes. Hence a fluctuating low pressure is to be considered while formulating the measuring strategy.
• Aspects about cleaning the unit has to be considered in the design of the product.
• The system should be affordable.
• The system should have reasonable level of accuracy.
• The proposed sensor could be a self designed product or a combination of 3rd party products or a standard sensor optimized through software algorithms etc.

NB: The students / teams who gets shortlisted for these challenge gets a direct entry to the Idea Fest finals and stand a chance to win the grant up-to 7 lakhs depending on the stage of their project / idea development. The number of teams per challenge which gets selected will be decided during the final stage of the event
