Use the robot tutorial to brush up and/or learn some useful features in Autodesk Inventor that will help you throughout the rest of the course. You are encouraged to reference back to this tutorial if you forget how to use a particular tool or feature.
It is a good idea to always practice good file management, we recommend creating a new folder called "Robot" in your H:Drive and saving your project within it often.
Start a 2D sketch and select the XZ plane
Select the rectangle tool and draw a 1"x1" square
Finish the sketch
Use the extrude tool to extrude the square 1"
Start a 2D sketch on the front face of your robot head
Select the circle tool and draw a .25" circle
Use the dimension tool to dimension the circle center .25" from the top and left side of the head
Use the offset tool to copy the circle .05" larger than the original
Use the line tool to draw a vertical line that is .5" from the left and right side of the head
Use the mirror tool to reflect your eye circles over the line you drewÂ
Extrude the eye sockets .1"
Star a 2D sketch inside your eye sockets on the face of the robot
Use the polygon tool to draw a hexagon for your eyeball
We will be using the mirror tool just like we did in step 3, remember to draw your mirror line
Extrude your eyeballs and add a -30 degree taper your your eyeballs
Start a 2D sketch on the face
Use the rectangle tool and dimension tool to draw the mouth as shown in the video
Use the 2D fillet tool to round over the corners of your mouth (.125" radius)
Use the offset tool to copy your shape and make it .05" smaller than your original
Extrude your lips .05"
Use the 3D fillet tool to round over the inside and outside edge of your lips (.025" radius)
Start a 2D sketch inside the mouth
Use a rectangle tool to draw a .05" wide rectangle on the left edge of the mouth (see video)
Use the rectangular pattern tool to copy the rectangle across the mouth
Select the geometry you want to copy
Select the direction
Set how many copies you want to make and the distance between copies
Use the project geometry tool to copy the shape of the inside of the mouth
Extrude every other tooth inside the mouth
Start a 2D sketch on the top of the eye sockets
Use project geometry to trace the eye socket
Use the polygon tool to draw a rectangle on the top center of the eye socket
Use the circular pattern tool to create 8 copies of the hexagon around the eye socket
Select the geometry you want to copy
Select the axis you want to rotate around
Set how many copies you want to make
Use the mirror tool to reflect the hexagons onto the other eye socket (remember the mirror line)
Extrude the hexagons to .01"
Start a 2D sketch on the top of the robot head
Find the center of the top of the head by drawing two diagonal lines from opposite corners
Use the two point center rectangle tool to draw a .25"x.25" square in the middle of the head
Use the 2D chamfer tool to add a .05" chamfer to all corners of the square
Extrude .05"
Use the 3D chamfer tool to add a .025" chamfer to all the top edges of the antenna base
Use project geometry to trace the antenna base, then offset that shape .075" smaller
Extrude the square .5"
Start a sketch on the top of the antenna
Draw a half-moon shape using a line and the arc tool (watch video closely)
Finish the sketch and use the revolve tool to revolve the half-moon shape around the center axis
Start a 2D sketch on the side of the robot head
Use the ellipse tool to draw a vertical oval on the side of the head
Use the line tool to draw a vertical line that cuts the oval in half
Use the trim tool to get rid of one half of the oval giving us that half-moon shape again
Finish the sketch and use the revolve tool to get a rounded ear
Start a sketch on the opposite side of the head and use project geometry to trace the ellipse from the other side of the head
Repeat the revolve process you did earlier in this step
Start a 2D sketch on the bottom of the head
Use project geometry on the bottom of the head and create an offset .1" smaller than the head
Extrude .1"
Start a 2D sketch on the bottom of the neck
Use the rectangle and dimension tools to draw and edit the body shape (copy video dimensions)
Extrude the body 1.75"
Open the midplane between two planes tool and select the front and back of the body
Start a new 2D sketch on the orange work plane that appears
Use the arc and line tools to create the pathway of your arm
Use the mirror tool to copy the same pathway to the other side of your robot
Start a new 2D sketch on the side of your robot and draw a circle at the top of the pathway
Finish sketch and use the sweep tool to sweep the circle along the pathway you drew
Repeat this for the other arm (you will need to turn on your sketch visibility - see video)Â
Turn the visibility of the midplane work plane you created for the arms
Start a 2D sketch on the work plane
Draw two circles for the claw shape (watch video closely for this step)
Draw a 2 point center rectangle
Use the extrude tool with the symmetric feature and cut feature selected to cut part of the arm
Turn on the visibility of the previous sketch within the extrusion
Use the extrude tool with the symmetric feature to add the claw
Use the coil tool to create a spring on the bottom of your robot
You will need to bring the work plan back and sketch a line and a circle before using the coil tool
