Mrs. Avellaneda serves as Director of Music at Saint Anthony's High School of which she is also an alumnus.
She earned her Bachelor's of Music in Instrumental Music Education from The Benjamin T. Rome School of Music at The Catholic University of America in Washington DC. Mrs. Avellaneda graduated with her Masters of Science in Education from the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College. She studied flute with Dr. Michelle Cho and Alison Hubbard. Her conducting teachers included Dr. Michael Smith and Dr. Kate Tamarkin of the Charlottesville Symphony.
Mrs. Avellaneda has taught in Lawrence Public Schools as well as spent the beginning part of her career teaching Elementary and Middle School band and strings at many Catholic schools on Long Island. She has been on the faculty of Saint Anthony's High School since 2022. Mrs. Avellaneda has formerly directed the Concert Band, Percussion Ensemble, and Music Theory. She is currently the Director of the Symphonic Band, Orchestra, Jazz Ensemble and Chamber Music Ensemble. She also serves as the schools NYSSMA liaison and moderator of the Tri-M Music Honor Society. As an active member of NYSSMA, she has been a woodwind adjudicator since 2010.
Mrs. Avellaneda also serves as the Touring Orchestra Director and has led her students in memorable performances throughout Italy including The Vatican for Pope Francis.
Mrs. Avellaneda is a member of NMEA, SCMEA, NYSSMA, NAfME, and NYSCAME.
She currently resides in Suffolk County with her husband Walter and son Gerard.
Mrs. Avellaneda believes in building connections with her students and educating the whole child. Through these connections, she creates a safe and comfortable learning environment and a place where students enjoy learning and expressing themselves through music.
