Saint Robert Bellarmine (Bobby)

Feast day: September 17

Patron saint of catechists and catechumens

The reason that I chose St. Robert as my Confirmation saint name is because of three reasons. First of all, I wanted my Confirmation name to be the same as my real name, Robert. Second, I wanted my Confirmation name to be a family name. My father's name is also Robert, the same with his dad. And third, St. Robert's feast day was the same day that I found out that there even was a St. Robert. St. Robert Bellarmine was born in Montepulciano (mont-e-plu-chi-an-o), Italy, on October 4, 1542. After his ordination to the newly formed Society of Jesus, he went on to teach at Louvain during 1570-1576, where he became famous for his Latin sermons. His sermons were so powerful that people came from all over and many of them were converted. He was a professor of theology at a Roman college for 12 years. There, he wrote a work of several volumes of defending the faith. He was so short that he used to stand on a stool in order to be seen in some of the high preachers of Europe, but he was big in other ways. In 1598, he was named a cardinal against his wishes.
